Hybrid Camaro
With Ford future plans to introduce a hybrid Mustang, a hybrid or electric Camaro couldn't be too far from a reality. Plus Chevy already produces the hybrid Volt and all electric Spark (85 miles on a charge) and Bolt (215 miles on a charge.) Would you buy a hybrid or electric Camaro if it was as fast or faster than the current model?

you will be lucky to buy a car that has a steering wheel in 15 years
SO WHO CARES ABOUT A HYBRID? will I be able to DRIVE my Camaro of the future seems to be the more appropriate question. There are children born today who will NOT learn how to drive a car. They will never know....or even care. transportation will be an app hooked to a self driving car that will drop you off and pick you up....on demand. the future is scary and wonderful place for a car lover. |

I will say the BMW i8 hybrid is done right. 0-60 in 4.0 and low 12s in the quarter. But for 140k lol. I dont see why chevy couldn't make a Camaro to do the same. But cheaper of course.

Absolutely love my 2013 Chevy Volt. 3 years and 75,000 miles later and I still love it. The Camaro should always have a big loud American V8 but eliminate the 4 banger and V6 for a hybrid and GM could be on to something. I was actually considering buying the Factory Five '33 Hot Rod kit car and making that into an electric car.

I would be all over a hybrid Camaro. Even if is was a 4-banger. As long as it has as much or more horsepower than the V8.

It would be awesome. A 455 hp hybrid camaro, lot of power with even better fuel economy. Something similar to the Acura NSX. 573 hp with 20/22 on gas mileage

I love how the most negative option is a strong "hell no" but the most positive option has the qualifier "yes, if performance was on par or better than current models."
If performance in this context means straight line performance or even track performance, then I don't even think it has to be said that a hybrid Camaro would obliterate any V8. It's just physics. If you don't know that by now, you probably aren't interested in the technology at all and are purposely ignoring it. It's 2017. Also, Ford's approach isn't exactly going to be a Tesla competitor. Think more along the lines of the McLaren P1 (if you don't know how its drivetrain works, again, you're probably purposely living under a rock at this point) but at a more affordable budget. If Chevy doesn't follow suite, they will be left behind. And let's face it, when it comes to Mustang vs. Camaro, Chevy always ends up being the "me too" company that follows 1 step behind at every pace, claiming to have taken their time to do the better job. If a 7th gen Camaro comes out assuming there's still a market for it, mark my words. There will be a hybrid drivetrain option. |

To everyone that said "Hell No" what exactly do you plan on driving in 3-5 years from now when that is all that is available?
Hybrid does not mean no or low performance, if anything it opens up opportunities for a lot more performance than anything currently out there at this time, and if Ford does it correctly and Chevrolet does not follow along the next Gen Camaro is going to get curb stomped by a performance hybrid Mustang. True, batteries can be heavy and add a lot of weight to the vehicle, but we are not talking about a Tesla sized battery that needs to provide 200+ miles of range on electric alone. The systems that would work well in a performance environment would more closely resemble an F1 KERS system with a smaller battery and multiple smaller electric motors that can be placed at each wheel to provide instant torque from 0 RPM to redline. In addition the battery can be located anywhere in the vehicle so it would be most advantageous to place it low and in the middle of the vehicle to aid weight distribution and keep the center of gravity low. These numbers are educated guesses, but a high performance hybrid system would add anywhere from 200-350 lbs of weight to a vehicle but could provide anywhere from 150-400+ hp of performance and efficiency. Take the low side 200lbs and 150hp and add it to a 6th Gen SS and you have a vehicle that is lighter than the ZL1 but has almost as much power and the ability to provide epic torque from 0 RPM. The maximum torque that electric motors provide even from 0 RPM is why a 5000lb Tesla can do the ¼ mile in the high 10s. All of that performance comes with additional irrefutable benefits that I guarantee every vehicle manufacturer is currently looking into. (if they wish to stay in business) Fuel economy improvements in EPA city cycles could be enormous along with big reductions in emissions. We may not really think of that as a big deal but with a lot of attention to climate change the last thing we want to do as performance enthusiasts is paint a target on our backs, especially when the benefits of systems like this are obvious. There is a reason that Ferrari, Porsche, McLaren and others all chose hybrid power trains for their flagship vehicles, and it wasn’t because they all turned into environmentalists overnight. TLDR: Hybrid platforms are the future of performance, jump on board or get steamrolled. (copied my comments from the General Automotive section where we are discussing the 2020 Ford Mustang announcement that it will be Hybrid)

Yes, only if it is a performance model that exceeds the V8.
