On Thursday one of the local radio shows started asking people if there was a place in the U.S. one could live where they wouldn't have to worry about any kind of weather related or natural disaster. There's not really a place where you don't have any bad stuff at all. The closest they could come up with was the pacific northwest but even there you get heavy rains. Every other place had the same tornados, bad hail, earthquakes, hurricanes, bad winters, etc.

So basically, you pick your poison. If you grow up with tornados, they're not as scary as earthquakes (the ground just isn't supposed to move). Then again, a couple of my neighbors moved here from California and get incredibly worked up whenever the sirens sound.

Best way to sum it up is to relay a story. Back in May of '99 when the really big tornado hit Oklahoma (about a mile wide, on the ground for over 35 miles, around 300 mph winds at times, etc) one of my employees was on the phone with a friend in California. California had just had a decent sized earthquake and my employee asked his friend how they handled things like that. His friend said it's nothing really, they don't sweat most of them and just put everything back in place when it's done. His friend said he didn't know how we dealt with tornados in Oklahoma since they were so destructive and we really don't have much warning that they're coming. My employee said it was no problem. We just go outside and take pictures of the tornado as it passes by.

Somewhere, I've got his picture of the big monster as it passed just over a mile away from his apartment.

Pacific northwest has more than just heavy rains to worry about. Mt St Helens for one.
