Angry My Battery Blew Up

So my 2012 Camaro SS/RS is a garage queen, it has 20,000 miles on it. I've used a battery tender since I got it in Feb. of 2012. Still has the original battery or I should say HAD. Went to start it up and it blew up, I mean LOUD. Like a fireworks. Put big holes in the case. Anyone ever have this happen?

Was the acid neutralized as it can do some damage . I had one blow up a few years back and it made quite the mess . Hope it didn't hurt the car .

had it happen on a kenworth.4 batteries wired in series.i cranked it and as it started i heard an explosion, turned out a battery had blown and blew the cover right off the battery box.since it was running and i had a 100 plus mile route with 10 stops to run i just said screw it and drove off, just didnt ever turn the truck off or stall it.boss wasnt going to arrive for another two hours and making deliveries late all day would have sucked.

That's crazy. I heard that Optimum batteries don't leak or explode. Maybe stick with that for your garage queen

Happened to my 64 Fury. Always on a tender. I was told the heat from the charger evaporates the acid. Then the lead plates get hot and melt which causes a short. Don't know if that is true, but that explosion was an eye opener!!!

Pretty sure there is a vent on the battery that must have been blocked. The little clear hose is supposed to vent the hydrogen out of the battery into the atmosphere outside the car.

Did it happen on the first start after removing the tender?

I know lots of guys use Deltrans but I'm not fan I had both a Deltran Jr (.75amps) and then got their "biggest" DeltranPlus (only 1.25 amps) and both couldn't get my 2 yr old battery to float mode, both would shut off after 8hrs (they'll keep on charging regardless of battery condition -read the fine print). That's when I got a CTEK MUS 4.3amp. I set it in Cold mode, it first showed I had some sulfation from what those fnnn Deltran chargers did to my battery it then went to desulfation mode and then thru all its stages until getting to float mode.

Search the forum and you'll see some have had problems with Deltrans. Deltrans are made more for motorcycle and small car batteries (not for the size of the one in our cars). Do some research and compare Deltran to CTEK ...no comparison! The CTEK has multiple stages with lights and checks at each stage and will not overcharge a battery like a Deltran will ...that is what most likey caused your problem.

If you're gonna stay with a Deltran and trust your large 720CCA battery and all the car’s sophisticated electronics to a $20+ not made for prime time unit with a rinky dink flashing light scheme that leaves you guessing what's going on then just like Dirty Harry said "you have to ask yourself ... am I feeling lucking today?"
