Horsepower is Expensive
Salivations!
After many $$ spent on suspension, brakes and cooling, I finally started pricing out HP gains for my '11 SS. I was a bit disappointed to learn my $7K budget would only net me ~30 HP increase. Seems HP gains are a bit more expensive than I anticipated. So I thought I'd run my new theory past the group. Tell me, if you don't mind sharing, how much $ you put into your ride for HP gains, and what did it net you?

Headers + CAI (install yourself) = $1k
Cam upgrade with all necessary components/upgrades/install and tune = $3k - $4k You still have $2k left over for suspension + brakes. That's at least 125rwhp What are you doing wrong m8? |

7k can buy you wayyy more than 30 hp. a cai alone is like 15. headers, cams, exhaust is like 2k total

Have to agree, with a budget of $7K, you should net an easy 100hp. Cam/valve train upgrade, port polish on the heads, LTH and HFC's, plus a tune should get you a nice gain with $$$ left over!

lulz..gotta luv these q's...If you don't already have a tune and/or a tuner...get one! Even on a stock motor a tune from Steve or Ted(or others) WILL-
A: wake your car right up...yes even completely stock..don't believe me your loss.. B:practically Every power adder requires a tune in order to MAKE the most of them...peeps do bolts ons all the time with no tune...oh hey runs AWESOME..lol...take the exact same car and tune it....my point will be made. C: once this is done and you have a much better understanding of what makes these cars go fast you will them be able to spend the money smart the first time...peace out... P.S. pls put your cars specs in your sig...tks..

Just read a thread somewhere here the other day that said you're fooling yourself if a cam job done properly, is less than $12K. That's not a typo. The shop owner said he can't keep up at that price.

I was recently quoted by a respected shop in the region, $4500 for cam job, LT headers and tune.

I've always been told a good rule of thumb when saving for power increases is $100/hp... if done right with no cut corners.

I picked up 41hp at the wheels for $2,000 with a cat back and X-pipe($1100), Vararam intake($300), Vararam Power Wedge TB spacer($40), ported throttle body($160) and a custom 93 octane dyno tune($400). I would imagine that with a $7,000 budget I could have done all that plus a nice cam and labor for install and added a total of 110 at the wheels and still had a few bucks left over.

But then he will have another $2,500 for install labor. I just looked into going this route on my car
