black smoke
2017 ZL1 with NPP fuse pull I noticed that all the time when running hard ( I dont baby this car) I get black smoke on full acceleration. I also notice black dot deposits on back of car.
What could this be and how is the best way to fix? the car only has 3K miles. |

That does sound rich. Unmodded I assume? You shouldn't see black smoke under any circumstances unless you've just babied it a long time (but you said you dont baby it) and jam down on it, but even then it wouldn't last long. May be time for a dealer trip or at least for someone to ride behind you and maybe film so you can see exactly what's going on.

The one and only time mine has blew out a bunch of black smoke, was when it wasnt fully warmed up. I throttled it pretty hard to get out of the way of some heavy traffic coming at me. I looked like I was driving a pre DEF equipped diesel. Hasnt happened since, but I dont goose it when its cold. And my exhaust tips are always dirty with black soot. My car is all stock.
Same black dots stuck on my cars rear as well.

that sounds pretty serious. ive never seen black smoke like in a cloud but my 2ss does produce black smoke on cold starts. also after driving around ive noticed the inside of the exhaust is coated in black soot. that also used to happen to my Silverado and regal GS. but ive also only WOT my Camaros less than 10 times combined.

It’s the build up that’s blowing out.

Right, but I've seen guys go down the interstate in non-DI Camrys from 10 years ago that blow black smoke when getting on it - assuming they hadn't gotten on it in a while and it's blowing out carbon buildup. I'm just trying to understand the correlation between DI and smoke, and if the OP says he doesn't baby the car, when is there time for any build-up?

I don’t baby mine either. This is a clip of me on Charlotte Motor Speedway. I had been driving aggressively to there from Columbia, SC. As you’ll see, once I lay into it on the track it cleans itself out again.
