Door ding on passenger rear quarter panel

Sadly I picked up a penny sized door ding on my passenger side rear quarter about three inches to the right of the fuel door. I contacted a paintless dent repair guy today and sent him a pic of the ding and he is telling me he won't be able to access the ding because it's too close to the fuel line. He's saying PDR isn't an option. Has anyone had a ding repaired in that area with any success or any opinion on if this can be fixed with PDR. No way I'm doing paint and body work for a small ding like this and it's gonna be hard to live with if it can't be fixed with PDR. I was reading about different PDR techniques including drilling a hole if neccesary to access the ding and also the glue system where the ding is pulled from the outside. I'm going to contact other companies to get a few more opinions. It seems like no matter how hard you try when you have a nice car someone or something is bound to mess it up.

Just fixed a couple of dings with PDR but they weren’t in that area, so I can’t help you there. However, it was the first time I used a PDR service and I was really amazed how nice the results were and the price. I’m in So Cal but maybe use Yelp to find other PDR companies if you haven’t already. Good luck.

I'd contact another PDR shop and get a second opinion, or drop by their place just to be sure. I wouldn't want to have body work to remove a ding.

I had 5 small dings (really dimples) fixed by PDR yesterday. The guy used the rods for all but one because he couldn't get access. Three were on the drivers quarter, one the passenger pillar and one on the hood. The passenger pillar one he used the glue stick and small hammer. He got it pulled out and claimed best he could do with that one. I had hard time seeing that micro indentation that was left, I was very happy.

The dimples on drivers side quarter were fixed by removing tail light and drilling a hole about the size of nickle and inserting various rods. After finishing he put touch up paint the bare metal of the hole, dried with a heat gun, and put a factory looking plug in it.
One of the dimples on the quarter panel was right on crease between lower fender and flat part around the wheel. I didn't think it would straighten up but it is now completely gone. I was skeptical of PDR but I'm sold now. I tried to watch as much as possible and to me it's clearly an art.

I have a PDR guy local that doesn't drill at all in the Memphis area. He's been doing this for over 20 years and does amazing work. Where he worked when he started, he said they drilled and that was one of the main reasons you couldn't watch.

I don't see a picture but I had a quarter size dent near the lip of the rear quarter and it could not be accessed from the backside but the guy i got spent two hours working it with hot melt and suction cups. I bet he used 30-40 but he got it out and after he buffed it I dare you to find it. It think it's more the skill of the tech. Is it easier if you can get it from the backside, yes, impossible, no. It cost me $140 but it was well worth it.

get another opinion. PDR is one of those things that is more art than science and the skill of your tech determines everything.

I've had PDR done multiple times and in this industry it seems a lot of people doing it don't want to risk hurting their 5 star reputation online and/or don't want to take on dings in difficult areas or difficult shaped dings. Most seem to be about pulling shallow dings from easy areas quickly. That said, I had dings repaired in this area on my 5th gen. I was told they were difficult to access from behind but that's how it was done. There are also methods to pull it from the front of the panel. Find a different PDR guy.
