Will insurance cover mods?

I have put a lot of money into mods for my car, does anyone know if I was ever in an accident if insurance would pay to replace them?

Depends on a few things...

• State laws
• Insurance Company's policy
• Proof/documentation

It's best to get your agent on the phone.
You may have to declare the value to insure...

Edit: Fault may play a factor as well...
In case of theft, itemize the value and see how much more coverage you may need...
Plus, depending on the type of loss, buying back the car w/ mods might be an option.

What would it cost to replace them? (not asking you, but that will be info you'll need when updating your coverage)

Some companies/policies cover up $5k in options... age of car and parts, plus replacement value are all factors.

Edit: custom fabrication will likely require you to declare the value to insure. ($30k car, $10k customization = $40k replacement value plus increased charges for comprehensive)

I've had some issues in the past with previous vehicles and

anything added to the car that was considered a permanent modification (not temporarily added) was covered (with documentation showing purchase and installation).

This really depends on the insurance company and the only person who can answer this question is your insurance agent. In my experience all insurance companies will cover mods but they have a specific way you have to go about it and are picky about what type of mods.

Some insurance companies will require you to take out a second insurance policy. Some will simply add the cost of the mods to your coverage and increase your premium to adjust for the extra coverage. Others will only cover cosmetic mods and won't cover performance mods. And a couple, for example State Farm, will cover all my mods with no extra charge as long as I keep the invoices showing how much they originally cost (not including labor).

Another note, in my experience mod coverage is also prorated meaning they devalue the mod based on length of time owned and, in the case of performance mods, miles put on the car. So if you mod the car and 2-3 years go by before you get into an accident then they may only pay half the cost to replace it.

My insurance policy covers up to $3000 in accessories, so as long as my mods don't go over $3000 I should be good.

It 100% depends on the insurance company. There are insurance companies that will cover mods as long as you have proof of purchase.

Most will require you to have a rider on it for any parts that are not stock. Call your insurance agent for full details...

when i had geico, i had to add it to my coverages with an itemized list of what everything was and how much they cost and it was added to my coverage and added cost per month.
I have state farm now and as long as there is some proof that it is on the car IF you have to make a claim, it is covered and doesn't cost any more then normal coverage and they don't need it listed or kept track of on their end of it.

I called my agent the other day and he just increased my base vehicle price by $5000 and asked me to keep prices of mods and take a few pictures.

Pay more but have an Agreed Value Add On on the Camaro.Mods don't depreciate.
