I can't afford the V8 now but if the alpha Platform will probably take some weigh off the vehicle, it gets light enough and it maintaines the current power of the V6 I will not worry about getting a V8 unless I win the lottery then all bets are off....LOL

I just got a horrible image of the day we're all silently driving around in silver electric cars and guns are all outlawed.

Due to the upcoming federal emission and fuel mileage requirements, I would not be surprised if there is no V8 in a 6th gen. Yes, there is a new V8 coming from GM but I think it will only go in the Corvette and trucks. The most powerful Camaro engine will probably be a twin turbo V6.....with equal or more power compared to the LS3.

It's not the number of cylinders that gives it that V8 sound. It's cylinder displacement (size of the cylinder). That is why a two cylinder Harley sounds mean as hell. That's also why a V10 may not sound as aggressive as a V8 due to trying to save space.

So if the V8 were to ever die, all engineers have to do is make those cylinders bigger! And there you have it...your V8 sound coming out of a V6 or maybe even a 4 cylinder

I doubt the reason for having only a V6 engine on the 6th Gen. due to government restrictions on emissions control. If thats the case, all vehicle will reduce to a v6 and law will state no automotive industry to manufacture and produce above 6-cylinder engines!

Its not held on the CAMARO to reduce emission!! LOL thats B.S!

Yeah, maybe it will be a Toyota Corolla too! I heard that they are going to come out with a four door front wheel drive Corvette with an overhead cam inline 4.

Then GM will come to their senses, and once the 7th gen launches, every Camaro fan on earth will do all that is necessary to never think of the 6th gen again.

Ok, now to be serious. There are too many potential buyers in this market segment (including me) that would never consider the car unless it had an AFFORDABLE V-8 option (No just having a V-8 ZL1 and calling it a day). My actual prediction for the 6th gen: A somewhat smaller displacement V8 (close to 5.5L, though not necessary exactly) with direct injection. It will have roughly the same output as the LS3, which will mean better performance in the lighter 6th gen platform. The DI, smaller displacement, and lighter car (plus other efficiencies that are always being found) will bring the EPA rating up to 27-28 hwy. (Which will probably bring it to about the 35mpg standard given the rating system used to calculate CAFE).

We do have V6's today making the same power as V8s from 5-10 years ago, but it is not the same. They don't sound like a V8, and more importantly, that power is always up around 7000 RPM with no torque on the low end, which defeats the entire purpose of having a Camaro. Works great for a rice burner tuner, but not for a muscle car.

A turbo can solve the torque problem, and I might be interested when a 20 year/200K mile powertrain warranty comes with it.

It makes sense to use it as a starting point rather than start from scratch. The displacement is about right too. It's basically what Ford did with the new 5.0L.
If the Camaro V-6 actually makes the same power as my 1998 LS1 and my 2002 LS1 then why is it that none of them can run a low 13 second quarter mile stock like my LS1's could at New England Dragway?

That's not quite right. The sound has more to do with firing order and degrees of rotation between firings, which is generally dependent on number of cylinders. For that reason, a V6 could never sound like a V-8. The closest you could come would be the odd-fire 3.8L V-6 (before the split-pin cranks).

If it were the size of the cylinders that caused the sound, the Viper V10 would sound exactly like the 360 V8 (it doesn't), and the 4.3L Vortec V6 would sound exactly like the 350 (it doesn't).
