Winterizing

Excellent topic as I have the same questions and concerns as you. I just took mine in and filled it up today with Sunoco 93. Gonna add the stabilizer later this week. Tires are a big concern for me. At $500 a pop, I don't want these babies cracking. I think I may put mine on jackstands for the winter and put the wheels and tires in one of our spare bedrooms.

If anything, if the car will NOT be in the air, you would slightly OVER-inflate the tires to help prevent flat-spotting. Ideally, you want the weight off the tires if the car will not be moving for several weeks or months, even if it is not cold. I notice my tires are slightly square (I exaggerate, but the flat spot is readily apparent) even after 2-3 weeks of inaction, but they smooth out after a few minutes. 2-3mo and it might not.
If you do not want to hassle with putting your car on stands or similar, there are several products that claim to reduce or eliminate the likelihood of flatspotting, such as these for around $250/set. http://www.amazon.com/Race-Ramps-RR-...0_SR160%2C160_ Fill up the tank and add Stabil or similar. I prefer to change the oil AFTER the winter, but some change it before. Hook it up to a battery tender if you haven't already. Of course, store the car away CLEAN and (hopefully) waxed. If you have a cover, use it! Last edited by chimazo; 10-12-2015 at 05:40 PM. Reason: Edited product link. |

I may order the race ramps chimazo mentioned just to have them. I'm trying to put miles on my car to get past the break-in, but there are times I can't drive it for 2 to 3 weeks at a time. So they would definitely be nice to have to avoid flat spots. |

If you have a thing about the tire but don't want to leave on jackstands, buy the cheapest wheels & tires that will fit, take off your good wheels/tires and store them. Replace them with the shitty wheels/tires. Boom, car is not on jack stands, you can move it easily if you have to and no fear of it falling due to some freak indoor soccer accident. You know, the kind where the ball only touches the car and somehow the car falls. Then I had to explain that to my mother. It was awful. Do you know what it means to drop a car chicks car off the jackstands. Ok.. so maybe it was a football and the thing that hit the car was my body. But still I was really sorry for it.
Soooo... yeah... put the shit wheels on the car.

race ramps makes a flat spot prevention type fixture that isn't cheap but much cheaper than a spare set of tires & wheels. Tires & wheels which clear the Z/28 brakes would not be super cheap.

Wheels and tires are versatile. Wheels and tires are like a gun. Rather have em and not need em than to need em and not have em. But meh, just my .02...

I thought the main cause of them cracking was not being stored in below 40* but being moved when they are below that temp? The tires on the ZL1 have the same recommendation for not moving when below 40*

I just bought the jack stands today but am still not convinced it's the best idea to have this car in the air all winter. To buy a second set of shit wheels and tires will probably not be cheap because they have to be big enough to clear the huge rotors.
Damn, if my basement doors were 6" wider I could just drive it in the basement for the winter. |

Find a wheel and tire set in a junk yard and let it sit on those. |

Any tire will flatspot if it sits long enough, you know, and pretty much any tire you'd want on your Z/28 (even if not an "R" tire) will not be suitable for very cold temps.

If you store tires inside keep them as far away from the furnace as posible. The heat can dry them out.
