6.2 vs 5.0
I have a pretty good understanding of how motors work (and the anatomy of a motor), but I have a hard time understanding something. Why is it that the 5.0 coyote motor produces as much horsepower and torque as a 6.2 ls3? Our motors are huge so you'd think they'd produce more power. Why don't they? Is this a design thing or something?
EDIT sorry accidently posted in wrong forum |

I would say that the main thing is the technology behind the engine. LS3 has the pushrod while the 5.0 had DOHC (I believe). Pushrod is an older technology but it has been working for GM. However the 5.0 still has less torque than the LS3. Also I believe that the power curves tend to favor the LS3.

Plus I believe mod for mod we will have bigger gains because of bigger displacement, all other things being equal. Remember the old saying... "there is no repalcement for displacement..."

My 2010 walked a 2014 5.0 both had same mods too.
Cai Lt headers Tune he just couldn't pull on me like I did him. Of course it was a close race until I got to top of 3rd and kept walking away. |

1.) Emissions.
(Tell chevy and ford to build their absolute best with only limit being no power adders, and see what happens) 2.) Horsepower sells cars. Do yourself a favor and look at the dyno graphs, not just the peak advertised hp/tq number. 3.) pushrod vs (d)ohc = apples vs oranges dude. Let's throw in a grape and throw out there the new direct injection LT1 6.2L makes 450/450 4.) tune But generally speaking on the same engine platform the larger size engine will always put out more power than the smaller displacement assuming everything else is unchanged about the motor except the cubic inches.

The LS3 being a pushrod engine makes it smaller and lighter than a corresponding displacement DOHC motor. This is the reason Chevy sticks with pushrod even though they are considered old tech. It is also the reason why LS-series engines are swapped into virtually anything... they fit in virtually anything.
The Coyote 5.0 is a great engine, but it is a bigger overall package to account for the dual overhead cams. So even though the LS3 is 6.2, the overall size of the engine is comparable or smaller to Ford's 5.0. At the end of the day, they make similar power with different attitudes. Pick your poison |

I believe our heads flow better also... hence the top end pull away.

Also not all displacement is equal.
A short stroke but big bore will have a different torque curve than a long stroke and small bore. Even though they may have similar displacements. |

Im skeptical about that. I had a 2011 with more mods than that and walked hard by a 5.0 with an aed tune, o/rx and cai..I think you beat the driver not the car. The heads flow very well on a 5.0 and alot lighter cars. Just depends on teh setups. 5.0s are running 11's with 3 or 4 mods and the right tune from a real tuner not an email tune like bama.

You easily could be right. I just remember the older 4.6 motors did not flow well even with power adders. I used to walk away from supercharged Mustangs regularly with my 4th gen Formula with a cam, longtubes, and other bolt ons but stock heads. I should have clarified that I do no know on the Coyote motor. But I know the older LS1 heads really flowed well at the time compared to others. But this was back in the LS1 hayday before others started catching up.
