Guys, will the stock A8 2.0L axles work with the LSD diff from the M6?
I don't need stronger heavier axles. Just figured I'd ask. Also the LSD diff is $2090.00 brand new from GM. anyone found a cheaper source?

Here's a used 2.0 MT diff in florida at Butler Auto Recycling. They want $996.45 though
https://butlerautorecycling.autopart...L23-1001164698 They have the axles listed for $724 per side, can get cheaper through the dealer... Might just want to call them and see if they are flexible, and how much for a whole package deal. Last edited by Jason@JacFab; 11-07-2017 at 01:42 PM. |

I don't know. Maybe they changed the part number? The only decent resource I have to look up parts is gmpartscenter.net, it does list the part number change for 16 and 17 for the differential, but the axle part numbers have stayed the same, so maybe it's a late 2016 car that got the "2017" differential part number? As the axle part numbers have not changed, I would guess that it would probably work for a swap, even if the axles came from a different source?

Diff swap! (Installing an LSD manual trans differential into an Auto trans car)
The diff and axles are ready to go for anyone looking to do a swap.

I don't want to jack your thread Jason but I couldn't attach the pics in our PM conversation. The trans cooler lines are merely C-clipped into what I believe is a mini radiator inside the SS pumpkin itself, as you noted, the non SS models do not even have the ports...not only would you need to tap for ports, you would also need the mini rad to cool the diff fluid. I guess it would be possible to put that unit in the SS, you would just need to loop the coolant lines. As we discussed, I would agree that the 1LE V6 pumpkin with the 3.27 gear would be ideal for the SS crowd. I am just not sure if the ring and pinion and made of the same strength. Sorry again if it comes off as a hijack.

thanks for the pics. I looked at the housing on the diff I have, the raised areas where the quick disconnect fitting would go are there, but not machined to accept them... I bet a guy could buy all the parts from GM to make it work on an SS with the diff cooler, would have to check at the dealer though I guess. Those pieces where the lines hook up to probably either screw in, or are pressed in. Hard to say without taking the diff apart I guess.
So the diff cooler sounds like it actually runs engine coolant through it, or maybe a separate coolant system that cools other things aside from the engine? In my mind I imagined it was an external cooler and not an "internal radiator" inside the diff. I figured there must have been some kind of pump to pump the fluid out, through the cooler and back in... What you describe definitely makes things more difficult for an SS to swap one of these diffs without losing the cooler. Like you said, v6 1LE, easily solution, but hard to find and expensive new. But it should be much easier for a person to swap in an SS diff into an i4 or v6 car and just plug the lines. |

thank you. does it look like the cooler can be purchased by itself without buying a complete diff center section? How about the quick disconnects, if they unscrew, are they available separately?

Thanks for the images. Makes sense now. Nice to see the fitting parts can be ordered, but without being able to get the cooler, seems like a retro fit is impossible.
BUT I did have a thought. If an SS guy wanted to run the 3.27 gears, perhaps he could split the case, and run the side from the SS, and the other side from the 3.27 diff. Or just put the 3.27 guts into the SS case with the cooler. |

Gearing shouldn't effect installing a converter. Steeper gears will actually help a converter.

I've been thinking about it... May or may not... I have been thinking about a converter though...
