Definitely use some graphite in there to lube it up. It'll help from damaging the lock tumblers.

If the lock cylinder is closed like the '90s Anti-Theft cylinders you will probably end up with a few grains inside unless the cylinder is removed from the lock assembly, cleaned, and re-installed. Haven't seen one of the new ones disassembled yet.

I know, I know, I know, deep your key in crazy glue, stick it in, wait 10 minutes, and if you can pull it out after that, there will be no more sand on the ignition.

Try driving over a car ramp with your left front tire. Once your car is on two wheels lightly tap the streeing column with a rubber mallet. The sand should fall out. Once the sand is out lightly tug on the steering wheel to the left. This should bring the car back down on all 4 wheels.

Or if you can't get the sand out just go with a theme and turn your car into a beach bum Camaro and put sand on the floor, seats, dashboard, everywhere! And play nothing but Beach Boys tunes.
