The Chevrolet Camaro had a big month in September while the Dodge Challenger fell far from the month before and the Ford Mustang stayed relatively steady –

allowing the Camaro to lead the muscle car monthly sales race for the 2nd time this year.

September 2017 was a fairly strong sales month for the American muscle cars, with the Chevrolet Camaro, the Dodge Challenger and the Ford Mustang combining for a total of 18,057, which is the best monthly total since May.

However, the big winner was the Chevrolet Camaro, which saw a big jump in sales over the month before while the Dodge Challenger – which won the August title – saw a big drop in sales.

Meanwhile, the Ford Mustang remained fairly consistent from the month before, allowing the Camaro to claim the September muscle car sales title.

Camaro Leads the Pack into October

In September 2017, Chevrolet sold 7,430 examples of the Camaro, which is 853 units better than the same month last year while also being more than 2,400 units better than August 2017.

The September total is the 3rd best month of 2017 for the Camaro and it comes after a 3-month lull in Chevy muscle car sales.

I believe it. When I first pulled up in my new 2017 RS at work everyone loved it and I received so many compliments. One guy loved it so much, he went out and bought a brand new 2017 SS just 2 weeks ago- so he helped contribute for Camaro's successful month of September!

When I bought my SS 1LE in June, my friend, who had a 2011 SS, liked it so much that he went out and bought an SS Fifty in July! These cars are contagious....

That's because mustang fans are waiting for the new 2018 version with its 10-speed A/T.
Let's be real.

Absolutely, they started building and shipping those 2018 Mustangs on October 2nd. Everyone is waiting for the 2018 one or deep deep discounts on 2017s at the very least.

Wait, you guys think the Mustang isn't in the lead this time b/c people are sitting and waiting? Huh? The Mustang sales stayed relatively the same, while the Camaro sales shot up. That wouldn't cause Camaro sales to jump up, and if there were THAT many people waiting for the 2018 Mustang to drop, or waiting for 2017 Mustang incentives, the Mustang's sales would have dropped quite a bit. Neither adds up.

The real question is whether Camaro retail sales actually increased, or if this was a massive fleet dump.

Paging MEDISIN!

While history this year would show no fleet dump, They may have dumped some to fleet. GM made no mention of Camaro sales in their monthly press release which usually highlights models retail sales.

From Fen's thread on GM september sales

"September Retail Highlights (vs. September 2016 unless noted)

Chevrolet
  • Best September since 2004.
  • Silverado was up 14 percent.
  • Equinox and Traverse, Chevrolet’s newest crossovers, were up 69 percent and 104 percent, respectively, the best September ever for Equinox and the best month ever for Traverse.
  • Bolt EV had its best month ever with 2,505 retail deliveries and 2,632 total deliveries.
  • Best month ever for Chevrolet electrified vehicles (Bolt EV and Volt), with 3,929 retail deliveries.
  • Trax was up 8 percent for its best September ever.
  • Impala was up 7 percent."

Ah I didn't do my homework on that one, I stand corrected if those numbers are accurate.

Wouldn't that mean extra cheap 2017 Mustangs?

With the Mustang price hike, they may not do well once the 17s are gone.

I'm curious to see how good the Mustang sales are the next several months as the MY18 models make their way to dealers and buyers. The price point for a fully loaded 18 GT is pretty damn high compared to the previous year models and certainly comparable to the 6th gen.
