Yep, 23 cents a liter works out to about 87 cents a gallon. I remember seeing 89 cents a gallon in the late 90s here in Wisconsin, and 75 cents a gallon at the same time in Atlanta on a trip down there. And that was pure gas, not the E10 with the watered down energy content we have now.

Actually, it was proposed to Congress as environmentally friendly. It was proposed to the consumer as "no choice, screw you."

I bought a car that was economical, then I just gave up and would only work close to home. I got to where I can get by on 5 gallons a week if I have to and when fuel gets this high I park stuff, I stay home, I buy just enough gas to get where I'm going.

It's like the stock market how much gas prices yo yo, take a chance drive on fumes for another day because it may be 20 cents cheaper tomorrow. Many people are doing stuff like this, many more city folks can't afford cars at all anymore.

Yet they say we still use too much.

actually, use is down about 10% in the US. the 2 biggest things sustaining high gas prices are:

1. a weak US dollar. since oil (and all commodities) are priced in dollars, the weaker the dollar gets the higher stuff we import will be. when the dollar the dollar looses half its value against say, the Saudi currency, they'll want twice as many dollars. it also makes commodities a cheap investment for foreigners.

2. both china and India are booming and using up the reduced demand from the US and western Europe.

Really? Im from up in the great white joke. Every year the toxic infection will spread and spread. In 50 years when the whole area is screwed we wont be saying its such a great idea. Its just a desperation move to stop the country from going broke anyway. When all the deals with China go to hell and the US says screw dealing with energy from up here this place will be done. The feds are betting the future of the country on the oil sands and its not going to work.

In the Boston area it was 69 cents a gallon in 1989 when I could still get leaded gasoline at a couple of stations in Roslindale and West Roxbury. Unleaded was about 85 cents a gallon.

So it was about $13.80 to fill my 20 gallon gas tank
