Something I learned today about our key fobs

So I'm an idiot, and managed to drop my keys in the trunk and close the lid while I was at work today. So I call roadside assistance and they send out this dude who looks exactly like Hodor from Game of Thrones, and has the intelligence to match.

He has a little blood pressure type hand pump that he jams in between my window and weather stripping and proceeds to fish around in my car with this long (annoyingly thick) metal rod. I'm worried he's gonna break the window prying it aside like that, and the rod tore up my tint. Well nothing was accomplished, and he finally gave up. So I call the dealer and was told that they could make me a new key, so I go in there and learn a very important fact (maybe you all already know this, but I sure didn't).

If you lose your keys completely and the dealer has to reprogram your chip, it will run you in the range of $230, plus the cost of getting your ride towed to the dealer. HOWEVER if you get a key made now, they can cut it based on your VIN for $60 and you can program it yourself in less than ten seconds. Thankfully since I still had my key I was only out the $60.

I don't really understand how they can charge you that much money for something that they can completely do on the spot in a couple minutes based on your VIN, but if you don't have at least one spare key, get it now, while you only have to pay $60, you'll thank yourself later.

do you get 2 key fobs when you buy a new car? that is a good point you make. i assume you get 2, but if not, i will ask that for part of the deal on the car

Yeah, thank Jeebus I only had to pay $60 for the new key and programmed it myself.

To program it you put your original key in the ignition and turn it to AUX and leave it for like 5 seconds. Then turn it off and put the new key in and turn the car all the way on. That's it.

That's really all it takes to program it, and they charge you $230 for it...

You're waiting on the dealer? They made me one on the spot in less than 5 mins. That's kinda weird....

I had the valet guy lose my key fob. He was upset that he lost it. After he was off work, he drove me home(40 miles) to get the second key fob. Got the key and drove back. He told me that I would be reimbursed for a new key. I went to the dealer the next day to order a new key fob. It was around $135. Couple days later got the new key fob. I programmed it in no time!!

Huh? Don't you have a trunk release button on your door?

That was the problem the car was locked, and when it's locked with the fob the trunk release button is disabled along with the door unlock buttons.

on me

That's why Hodor was there with his ballon pump, trying to get in the LOCKED car.

It works this way on a 13:

The dealer orders a key from the regional parts hq and it comes in cut based on your VIN #. i had to show DL and registration. It was $90 at my dealer. Took 3 days. You put in your other key and start engine and then turn off car. Insert new key in 5 secs and start

Done and programmed....
