I can tell everyone here on the site with ABSOLUTE CRYSTAL CLEAR 100% CERTAINTY my catch can after about 600 miles of use trapped about 2 tablespoons of engine oil. This oil would have been ingested by my motor if this device was not installed. It serves a purpose whether GM put it there or not its staying on the car. Remember these DI motors do not have the benefit of detergent fuels passing over the back of the intake valves to help keep them clean.

No but there is question by some if its needed and if it was the manufacturer would have installed it. I was just letting everyone know it is purposeful thats all.

I have Elite catch can in my C6. Quality product.
I'm using Mishimoto unit in Camaro. Again, quality product.

+1

Lots of guys that are performance oriented on other platforms said after seeing the valves on their cars, said they would pull the heads at 60-70K and have them cleaned. With no fuel over the valves, and no proven method to really clean them with the heads on the car a good CC is cheap insurance.

Exactly. Now, the LT1 engine was developed with an oil/air separator in the valve covers. How effective is their system? It probably slows the coking down a bit, but I'm sure it's still quite significant.

I think the issue with the manufacturer putting them on is the maintenance issue. I don't think, for them, in today's world, it is as simple as that. For them to do it, it would have to be large enough to remain untouched for x amount of time, say scheduled oil change intervals. I would imagine the can would have to have a sensor to tell the ecm when it was at safe capacity. Then there would be the whole maintenance protocol, procedure and I'm sure a bevy of legalize.

As far as warranty, they would have the burden to prove that it was indeed the catch can, or an issue with the installation of the catch can that caused whatever failure may have occurred. The two biggest issues I could see this causing would be either a faulty installation that caused the PCV system to fail, or if the owner failed to empty the can and large quantity of the 'liquid' were ingested by the engine causing damage.

I bought an Elite Eng. Catch Can because I wanted to see for my own eyes if that much oil was being deposited into the upper end of the motor and I was shocked of the amount at different intervals, I don't think that much oil being dumped into the top end is good for maintenance and overall life expectancy of the motor, I would imagine all that excessive oil will eventually gunk up the motor ...

Heads up, a guy over on Camaro5 just had his warranty denied for a catch can. I put an Elite on my car as soon as I got it too. Definitely not a mod that's worth having your engine warranty void in hindsight.

There is more to that story. I have it in writing from a service manager at a GMC/Chevy dealer that a catch can will NOT void your warranty. What else did he do to the car, thats the real question.

Why install a return line at all? GM and the EPA want you to burn all that stuff, so they make you put it back into the intake tract, to go into the cylinder again. That's where the deposits come from.

But, why put it back? Take the PCV line from your engine, run it to something (filter, catch can, etc.) and never run it back to the intake tract.

That's what we did on my LS1 race motor. Just ran it down near the ground and put a tiny little K&N filter on it. Prevents air from getting in, and who really cares if I'm putting a drop of oil every week on the ground on some random road?
