Sorry about your car dude.
They did send aid to the accident, that's how they found the car. They police said it was running and OnStar was talking, but no one was around. I would have thought after talking with police someone would have tried to contact me, but no one did.

How does insurance handle it if the car is stolen with the fob in it, whether accidentally left in there or not? Is there no liability to the owner?

Just seeing what's under that hood made it heartbreaking. All that time and effort on that car - it took one douchebag to ruin.

FOB in the car = keys in the ignition. I've never done either and this shows why no one should. FOB always stays in my pocket.

Even when I gas up, I take the FOB and lock the doors. Anti-theft devices are great but they alone can't prevent a car from being stolen. </soapbox>

I might sound heartless but leaving the fob in the car is sort of asking for trouble. Yes people should not take what isn't theirs but leaving the keys in an unlocked car is not the smartest thing to do.

It's the absolute definition of negligence. I would have a hard time paying you if I was the insurance company.

Way to pile on guys! I'd consider that acceptable if either of you had never made a mistake or forgotten to do something when you have a lot of things on your mind.

Let's not forget that the scumbag thieves here are the ones at fault.

OP - so sad to hear about your loss. Don't get worked up about the advice here about insurance. Just report it full up the way it happened and simply admit that when you walked away to go your you're hotel room - you just forgot to get the extra key out of the car. In a past life I worked as an insurance adjuster for years. Being forgetful and leaving keys in a car is not a reason a claim can be denied.
