Sorry to see that happen. Hope the thief got totaled also.
There's an electronic box that scans for the keyfob frequencies and can open and start the car. Several stolen in California last year. I keep my fob in a Faraday bag to prevent that. A local TV station did a story on this a few months ago and recommended keeping your fob in a metal can when you're inside your house if the car is outside.

I towed it to GA on a trailer. I always leave my fob in my cupholder why I tow and I keep one in my truck console. After I unloaded the car from the trailer I was getting my bags out of the truck. I thought I locked it, but the keyfob was still in the cupholder. For all those asking. What I'm kinda upset about is the car was wrecked and OnStar never tried to contact me. When I found the car gone in the morning, I called OnStar and they told me they couldn't locate my car. I had to call the highway patrol to find it. There was a witness who saw 2 people walking around near the crash site, but they disappeared.

A kill switch to the detector for seeing the fob when in the driver seat to turn the car on should be sufficient to stop a thief even if they steal your fob id. Just got to find that sensor to tap a switch to its power lead
