what insurance companies determine as risky and breaking the law are two very different things.
Nobody is saying to break the law here. Hard acceleration is not breaking the law if your tires aren't losing traction and you're not exceeding the speed limit. In some localities, this is completely at the discretion of the police (stupid localities) and in others there are clearly defined rules as to what amounts to excessive acceleration. Both are moot points if you are taking your car off public roads to do it. I drive through turns at 40+ mph and dont like wasting time to reach the speed limit. I would be categorized negatively by such a big brother program. Though, I dont drive with my phone in my hand or carry on important calls or deal with rowdy children or drive distracted in any way and I use my blinker all the time and dont get into accidents. People accelerating slowly and decelerating slowly are usually on their phone and need a big buffer because they're not paying attention to traffic and they're wasting precious turn signal time leaving car lengths in front of them and not reacting to the green immediately. Chain that turn or GTFO the road. Missing lights because of these idiots. anyway...so the moral of the story is ...nobody is talking about breaking laws. |

I'm asking my dealer to completely opt out of the free OnStar period and if possible completely disconnect OnStar from my car - if possible. I know it's not likely. But I don't need it. Don't want it.

On-Star is just a growing monster that they just can't let go of. If the technology exists to collect data, you can rest assured it will be done.
It's a no-win situation for the buyer. If you don't opt in, you must be hiding something. The rouse is opt-in if you want a discount....When opting in is really the new normal. Don't opt in and you've already admitting you've got something to hide or that you don't want seen by "anyone else". It's coercion in it's purest form, made to look like you have some sort of choice. |

In the mean time you can pull the fuse for onstar. Only downside to this is that the microphone is embedded in the same control module so you lose the in-car mic. Doesn't bother me at all since i dont talk on the phone while in the car. Hopefully once the service manual is released, the instructions to get to the module will be in there and I'll be able to open it up and disable the radio portion of the control module only and leave the rest intact and active. |

Basically, they can't distinguish the "good" hard braking from the bad, and would always interpret recorded instances to the driver's (policyholder's) disadvantage. No Damn Thanks! Norm

Neither my camaro or volt have smart driver enabled. Likely because I told the sales guy I will set up with onstar later rather than spend another hour at the dealership. Likely those who set up with the dealership got all the options turned on because you were like "yeah yeah" turn it on and let me go drive.
I can't imagine what that would say about my driving. I should turn it on for the volt to see how my wife actually drives it. |

slippery slope, I am definitely out! (as long as we have the option to opt out.... which I'm sure they will take away the option to opt out at some point) |

Can you imagine the report after a visit to the track?
I didn't know about this (don't have a Camaro yet) but I'll be sure to turn it off immediately.
