2016 Camaro SS (manual) gearing comparison

Here's a comparison between the 2016 Camaro SS vs. 2015 Mustang GT (Perf Pack) vs. 2015 Camaro SS vs. 2015 Camaro 1LE. Overall, I'm happy with the gearing they chose. It's basically identical to my '00 Z28 M6.

If they do offer a 1LE package or performance package for the sixth gen, I'd like to see a 4.10 axle ratio used, since that will still allow up to 130mph in 4th gear and would keep engine speed still at a reasonable 2000rpm at 80mph.

Also, here's a comparison between the manual and auto (for '16 Camaro SS). Anyone thinking the 2.77 axle ratio in the auto is 'too low' needs to look at the curve for gears 1-4 (compared to manual)!

Is that for real? If that's the case, I'm very disappointed. This means the new SS will have collectively less aggressive gearing than the 5th gen, yet turn a higher RPM on the highway. I wanted the opposite.

I like the current gearing for the 5th gen SS because it is more aggressive on lower gears and very tall on the highway. This is why the base SS is superior to the 1LE in drag racing, while getting better highway mileage at the same time. Seeing them put those crummy 1LE ratios in the base M6 SS tranny is a disappointment. Putting a 3.73 rear stock is also extremely aggressive for GM and gives little room for aftermarket improvement. You'll be turning high RPM's on the highway this way and have a structurally weaker rear gear set because they are essentially thinner.

Umm ... you might want to look at the data sheets again. I think you're looking at the Mustang Performance Pack numbers, not the 2016 Camaro. The new SS is geared slightly taller than the old, but it works out to only 1 mph in 6th @ 1500 rpm.

1250 rpm cruising at about 55 mph and 1500 rpm at about 65 mph give or take, that's your fuel economy on the highway curtesy of GM.

The Corvette Z51 uses nearly exactly the same gearing in the 8 speed auto as the Camaro....and it turns 11s in the 1/4 mile.

Camaro will be just fine.

Great info thanks. Its tall once again for a sports car. They set it up just like the current ZL1, but not sure if the power to weight is same. Great setup for 19" wheel conversion .

I still think 0-60 in 4.3-4.5 and 1/4 mile in 12.8.

Never knew a stock 5th gen didn't need 4th gear in the quarter mile. How is that considered "aggressive" by anyone? Don't forget the tire size is about an inch shorter so that alone makes a difference.

It looks like they increased the ratio of 6th gear to make up the difference.

I still would rather have more aggressive gearing in the transmission and a less aggressive ring and pinion gear. I like a taller gear from the factory because they are generally stronger, and I like the idea of being able to make larger jumps in the aftermarket. What does this mean for the M6 guys? We will have to go to 4.56's to see any decent gain? And 4.56's have the reputation for being very weak, constantly shearing. I don't like it. The auto setup looks nice with 2.73's. You can swap to a 3.42 and see huge acceleration gains while maintaining a strong ring and pinion gear.

It also looks like we'll have to shift into 4th in the quarter mile. That'll hurt for sure.

I'm pretty in not the only one that had to shift into 4th in the quarter mile with my 6 spd manual.

vtirocz, THANK YOU. I've been wondering what the highway rpm cruise would be around. Looks like 1600 @ 70mph. I just couldn't stand 3800 rpm @ 70-75 with my evo. Another fantastic reason for me to be happy with ordering my 2ss manual haha.

I would like the manual SS to have a 1:1 ratio in 5th gear instead of 4th gear to keep the engine in the higher RPMs better on shifts during racing. The 3.73 is fine with me. The lower weight of the 2016 will be easier on the ring and pinion.

I agree a 3.45 rear end gear will be a killer set up in the A8 at the drag strip. This will put you right at the about 6500 rpm in 5th gear at the end of the 1/4 mile. I wonder if the 5gen pumpkin will bolt right into the 6 gen differential?
