2SS W/Bose subwoofer question
In my 20+ yrs experience in car audio, I've learned to create some systems with excellent bass response that will make the hair on your neck stand up WITHOUT a subwoofer.
For people with cars that have limited trunk space and did not want a sub box taking up half of it, a very high quality pair of 6x9s (Boston Acoustics used to be amazing 15 years ago) and a strong MOSFET amp from Alpine or Pioneer running them and I could bring smiles to customers who wanted bass AND saved their trunk space. Small trunks like ours are perfect natural enclosures for high quality 6x9s. So as I'm looking at my Bose system and see two 6x9s in the rear deck, I'm thinking of removing the sub and upgrading the 6x9s drastically. I still have my old Pioneer that I ran my BAs with 20 years ago, and it is stronger and louder than the factory Bose. But how on earth do you get the sub out of this thing??? Back in 1983-84, JBL made KILLER 6x9 speakers. I had two pairs in a '68 El Camino with a Concorde Mosfet deck and aftermarket amp...I have no idea what JBL offers today for aftermarket car audio. Hmm.... I love the talk of 6x9 speakers & Muscle Cars!! Yeah baby! Glad this thread is up. Have my attention!

There's no easy way to add amps to the Bose yet. You will have to use a summing device to get an unmolested signal. There's quite a few threads about this. Also you will need to unplug the ANC mics.

The aftermarket car stereo market is not as popular as it was 20 years ago. Partly because manufacturers have improved factory systems and done a good job in making people think the factory system is really good when most, even our Bose, are average at best. I still think with $1500 bucks you can blow the Bose system out the water. I'm looking at Focals right now. |

Just guessing that you suspect the read deck 6x9's are the main subs. They are not. Also I think there is only one person around here who managed to remove or add speakers to that location by dropping them in from the top. It appears they are factory installed before the rear window is in place!

Yeah if you read down I replied that I realize now there is no sub in the system. I found this: http://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=447779 The guy didn't remove his 6x9s but he does show how they're mounted under the rear deck plastic trim cover. Somewhere in another thread I was looking at a guy asked his Chevy dealer for the GM instructions on how to replace a rear deck Bose speaker and he said it did not indicate you need to remove the rear window. So as I look at the picture my guess is that the extended trim rings around the speakers with the foam on them are there to seal to the rear deck plastic trim tightly and to eliminate rattles. I am thinking that trim ring snaps or unscrews off the actual speaker frame, enabling you to have enough room to pull the speaker out of the unit body deck frame without removing the rear window. I would like to know before I complete tear the back of my car apart, however lol. Hopefully I can find some better detailed pictures of the rear deck speakers, or maybe I'll just go to my dealer and ask for the rear speaker remove procedure out of the manual! Just dreading actually moving around back there. I'm no small fry. Just me and my girl and we're not having kids so rear seat room never was an issue..... until now lol Last edited by fastball; 04-02-2017 at 08:53 PM. |

There is thread around here which shows the rear 6x9's are the same part number as those in the door. That means they can be driven just as hard.
I would suggest driving the stock 6x9's as sub-woofers and maybe augment with a 10" or 12" sub in the trunk. Seems like a pain to get the 6x9's out and then you probably have to put something low profile back in or undermount as others have done. |

This is smart strategy. My main concern is how much the front panel rattles with those drivers trying to make bass. I would want to apply a crossover in the front and have the deck speakers handle all the bass in the system. Ideally they would be phase matched and the crossover would be around 80-100hz. |
