couldn't someone just reset the DIC, then jump on the highway for a tank?

So you can get higher mileages in controlled situations. But calculations per tank is where the truth lies.

These cars can get decent mileage for what they are, even though most of us did not buy them for their mileage. For those that use them for DDs, it is still good to keep an eye on the mileage as it can be an indicator of problems before they become big ones. |

Why should you be jealous? They should be the jealous ones, you have enjoyed driving your car 10 times as much as they have..

Not sure why so many people feel the need to lie about the avg mpg. Maybe it helps them sleep at night.

I don't even look at my average mpg. That's not why I bought the car.

I track mine just to keep an eye on it. If there is a big drop, got to look at the driving during that tank, if nothing really changed, then what might be wrong with the car. So to me it is more of a useful tool to track. I have all the fillups for my car since I bought it and all the fillups on my wifes new car tracked.

reset the computer, then set the cruise control at 75. My Camaro SS can get a little over 24 MPG. Remember, That's really trying to max my MPG. I just can never understand guys posting here claiming that they get 28-29 MPG on a 5th Gen SS. Makes no sense.

Completely get that (especially with a V8). Was curious with it being the first tank, and glad to see it was where it "should" be according to GM.

I never reset the DIC when I bought my used 2010 with 10,500 miles. The avg when I bought it at was around 16mpg (I bought it in a city area with a lot of traffic lights) and when I traded it with almost 45,000 miles, it was up to 20.8mpg avg which it was stuck there for well over a year before I got rid of it. Mostly highway commuting but I'm not a slow driver as well and didn't worry about top speed to maintain gas mileage as I would pass everyone I could in passing lanes, lol.

I've actually found over the past few years that the typical "try to save gas" type of driving actually hurts your mileage. Like say when trying to ease on the gas too easily for too long to get to the speed limit actually made the mileage go down and getting a little more on the gas and getting up to speed quicker and then just giving it just enough throttle to maintain speed was actually better than driving from a stop light like a grandma or Prius driver.
Also another thing I noticed about bad drivers that might hurt their gas mileage is non stop braking and accelerating instead of using the throttle to stay at a constant speed and using engine braking and letting off the throttle a little early to slow down for a corner rather than gas+brake+gas+brake+gas+brake. This one time on my way to work I counting the times I seen the brake light go on in the car in front of me and in just a few mile stretch and I counted 17 times they hit the brakes to my 1. Maybe that's why I can stretch the speed limits and still get great gas mileage and seem like I never wear brakes out. Smart & efficient driving goes a long way... (of course I'm not a total grandpa driver and well, I can't really say in public the speeds I've hit on more than one occasion, lol) |
