Cam Choice
What goes into your guys decision in picking the right cam for your car? They all pretty much cost the same, seems like most shops all have different levels of their own “custom grind” cam, what leads you guys to your decision on which one you go with, also as opposed to a stage 1-3, why not always just go with the highest stage if it is giving you the most HP?

Since your car is FI, you may want a cam with a wider LSA and perhaps negative overlap.

Bigger cam = more power
Bigger cam also = bad drivability You want to balance in the middle unless you have a desire for either stock drivability (Smaller cam) or just all out peak HP and no care about drivability (Bigger cam). Personally, I've driven a C7 Z06 (LT4, same as the ZL1) with a Vengeance Stage 3 cam, car put down about 775 RWHP and had power everywhere. You can look up their youtube channel for some videos on lope, drivability and the like on their YouTube channel. Don't just get a massive cam because you can. You'll break more parts and the car will be harder to drive (High revs off idle, bucking, stalling, no down low power, etc.). |

bigger cam has a rough idle and may sacrifice a little low end torque. In the LT4, supercharging will negate some of this torque loss or it will be less noticeable. Higher lift cams can be harder on valvetrain parts such as valve springs and rockers. For road racing, a high lift cam can be really tough on parts and it has been suggested to try a cam with lower lift numbers. It depends upon your use and hp goals.

For me, I will chose a simple cam that will keep the ZL1 driveable, add some power and will stand future mods.

How is the lope sound on a smaller stage 1? I had a decent size cam in a previous Vette and it bucked like hell at idle and ended up causing issues. As silly as it may sound, with a Zl1 I’m not looking for any more power - simply the joy of hearing the lope with headers. Just curious if the 1 is underwhelming
