Why can't I Hook!?
Hows's it going everyone, Merry Christmas first and for most.
I was wondering if anyone can help me out as to why my camaro doesn't hook when i launch? My wheel set up is 20x9 front, 20x10.5 rear. On M/T Street Comp Tires 275/35/20 front and 305/35/20 rear. I've talked to a couple of friends about this issue I've been having and a lot of possible reasons have risen such as too much psi, side wall of the tire is too stiff, wheels are too large, not warming up the tires. I'm just trying to figure out why I'm not hooking or is it that I'm not launching correctly? Thanks in advance for all the help everyone |

please describe any mods to the rear suspension and your approach to the burnout through the launch, then we may be able to help.

The short answer is that there is no sidewall flex on the low profile tires.

You're not running drag radials, those are a regular street tire.
Pick up a set of MT ET Street radial SS and you should hook hard at the right pressure and burnout. |

No suspension mods or engine mods just yet. All i have is a CAI without a tune. and as for the burn out and launch i hold my foot on the break and slowly raise the rpms. Once i get to about 1500 i start applying pressure to the gas and wheels start to spin (Traction control is off, i hold down my traction control button down for about 7 seconds to shut it off completely.) As for launch i do the same thing but i turn traction back on and dont go above 1500 rpm or else the wheels will start to spin every now and than from my own personal experiences.

I usually drop my tire pressure to 25-28 depending on the track prep. Some say to leave them alone, but I've had better luck dropping the pressure.
I usually drive around the water box and do a quick clean off prior to getting staged. I rev to 2000-2200 and slip the clutch while slowly rolling onto the gas. If you stab it, you will spin. If you don't ride the clutch out, you will bog or spin.

Well mines an auto, so i usually just keep my foot on the brake and slowly increase the rpms until it feels comfortable cause if i go to high than my back wheels will spin

My bad, I saw your name and assumed you were a manual. ProStock John can give you the best advice on how to launch an auto.

So your car all stock?? You may be doing to much of a burn out with the street tire to much heat will make street tires grease. Try dropping them between 25 to 30 psi with a lite burn out and leave the T/C off.

32PSI. Just clean the tires off and leave at 1,000RPM. Should dead hook with a 1.94 to 2.0 60'. That works on the stock Pirelli's.

All stock except for CAI?
If at the track I would run the rears at 25 psi cold. On the street I'd probably run then at just over whatever PSI you need to avoid setting a code... 30psi? Rolling into the gas quick on stock tires = 1.95 for me a few years ago.
