UPDATE: 2016 2SS: Totaled Or Not?
So last week I got into an accident in my 2016 2SS (20,000 miles). I was driving on the interstate during a particularly bad rainstorm, hydroplaned, and hit a steel road barrier. Luckily I wasn't hurt and was the only one involved in the accident.
Fast-forward to today: I'm getting the runaround from my insurance adjuster about whether the car is totaled or not. During his initial field inspection, he wrote the damages totaled up to $13,500. The damages have to reach a 70% value threshold to be totaled, and he's saying the car is worth around $30,000 (I disagree) currently making the repairs reach a 45% threshold. Right now the car is sitting at a well respected collision shop awaiting tear down. Additional damages will be determined at this time, but the 'tear down guy' is out sick. I'm getting mixed opinions from shop employees and my insurance adjuster on what the end result will be (totaled or not). What do you guys think? Does it look totaled, and if so, am I looking at possibly hiring a lawyer to push this thing over the 70% threshold? Last edited by harrist5683; 03-01-2018 at 07:27 AM. I'm not an expert but this looks like a lot more than 13K to me.

That looks like a hell of a lot more damage than 13.5 to me. Hell when my wife's explorer got into a very minor fender bender inside a car wash the damage was over 1,100.

I'd expect to see this car at Copart one day!

I recently had my 17 ss repaired from where a guy backed into the front fender/bumper.
only replacing the fender, fender liner, bumper, various bolts/screws and painting was right at 2k. yours looks like much, much more than that. |

Thanks for all of the replies. I'm hoping that when the collision shop pulls the front bumper off, they find more issues. It's been pouring rain 7 days straight down here in Tennessee, so the condition is not getting any better. They can barely even open the driver's door (it bends the metal around the front quarter panel and you have to force it open). I'm thinking 13,500 is an extremely low-ball estimate.
The 'tear down guy' said there's a 90% chance that the vehicle is a total and another employee is talking about how my car is worth 45k and there's no way it's a total (lol). I have no idea what to expect. It's unfortunate because I was in the middle of shopping around for a '18 ZL1, with this as my trade-in. Either way I'm not keeping the car, but a total write off makes the financials a lot easier. |

The $30k value sounds spot on, but damage definitely looks like its more then $13.5k, I assume there will be a lot of hidden damage and they cant quote it until its torn apart. So 70%, you need it to get to $21k, have another independent bodyshop do an estimate on it.

Looks like a total to me. There will be more damage than just the physical damage that you see in those pictures. Frame damage. Who knows what's been damaged under the hood. I'm going to guess at least $20k if not more. There's no way in hell it's just $13k.
PS - I'm in Knoxville, about tired of the damn rain. |

make sure you get diminished value also, , even if they fix it its on the car fax forever, resale value would be low.

My insurance guy is saying that my value after repair will go from 30k to 25k, but I'm not sure how accurate that is. Especially if I'm trading into a dealership. |

Yes, I reckon this is over 20k worth of damage. Is this a 1LE? All of the radiators add up. The hood, fenders, support beams, headlights, bumper cover, grilles, that's all 18k or so worth of parts. Add in suspension damage, doors, rear quarters... Yeah, it's done. :(*Glad you're all right.
