Only GM knows what they are going to do, as I'm sure its already been talked/planned...

If the hearsay about Ford is true and they indeed release the base Mustang with a 310HP turbo 4 (and would probably get low to mid 30s MPG), then I think Chevy has two options:
1) If they only want to offer two engine choices for base or "SS" trim, well then their turbo is going to have to be 300+ HP as well. I don't logically see where a turbo 4 with this much power leaves room for a V6 unfortuently. 2) Offer 3 engine choices. A base 270 HP turbo 4 that gets as good or better MPGs as Fords Turbo4. Then offer a 330+HP V6 that should be able to get over 30 MPG (shouldn't be a problem in the smaller lighter car). Finally the "SS" engine option. I really hope to see a V6 option but I have my doubts. I don't see them offering a turbo V6 either if a V8 is still an option. To me, the turbo V6 would likely be just as expensive, and if they used the 3.0 V6 it would probably be tuned to have less power than the V8.

i would rather see a turbo 3.6 than a turbo 3.0.
i think at this point it is pretty much confirmed that both the mustang and camaro will have turbo 4s in the next generation. while many see it as heresy, at least they will still make decent power, unlike the 4 cylinder mustang and camaro they made in the 80s. the turbo 4 will be a fun, somewhat fast car, but the turbo 6, hopefully 3.6L, will be a beast if they do it right. i think the turbo 6 is still only a rumor though.

I would be surprised to see a V6 in the Mustang or Camaro. The turbo 4s are more efficient and produce comparable power.

Does this mean that a v-8 won't be an option at all?

I posted this about a year ago, the salesman at my GM dealer told me the new Camaro's likely wouldn't have a V8. Obviously that remains to be seen but everyone on the forum told me I was nuts. It has to do with the government mandated fuel economy. I guess we will see.

Makes sense. What do you know about the Corvette engine and design since the Camaro will be taking ques from that?

My brother is a die-hard Mustang guy and he is getting prepared to buy the next new Mustang that comes out. He laughed because he said it will probably be some kind of turbo 4 cylinder. He has only ever driven v-8s of anything. He laughed because he knew the irony of him driving a car with half the cylinders that he had ever driven - he knew it was going to happen....
It will happen to the Camaro, too. I bet people didn't think they would put 4 cylinders in muscle cars in the 80s, but they did.

We know that the C7 is going to have one of the new Gen V V8s but GM has kept information on the new engines on lock down. We should know more October 24th at 8:30am.
