According to edmunds.. the curb weight on the LT's are 3738lbs. to 3802lbs. and the SS's are 3908lbs. to 3935lbs.
So in other words we can see a SS in the low 3700lbs range and an LT in the mid 3500lbs range. Man thats awesome!

Or as low as 3438 for absolute cheapest model made. ( 300 lb loss floating around as well)

And yes, it's a pretty big deal

I hope the 200 lbs pans out. I'm just surprised GM could make the SS lighter than the ATS-V even though it is a larger, less expensive car.

Less brakes. Doesn't have standard MRC.. At least I think ATS-V does. It's really less car in base SS trim than the ATS-V. 2SS and a. Ore track oriented model will probably weigh more than ATS-V.

Clever engineering using what you got to work with costs nothing. For example they even drilled several holes in key areas to save weight. If they really have a team camaro... Suppose it's possible they got really clever. It is possible... And they seem passionate enough to go all in with efforts while keeping cost down. Another example... The car got its width by using longer suspension parts at the same pickup points. Not gonna add much weight there. Last edited by ULTRAZLS1; 05-20-2015 at 06:11 PM. |

So just assume 1) Mark Reuss is a smart man. I've had meetings with him and I believe that to be fact not assumption 2) Mark Reuss would not want to be called out for lying or fabricating numbers or mis representing the car and 3) Mark is very much in tune with the Camaro.
If you assume all of these to be true, and I do, model to model means 1SS to 1SS. It does NOT mean 1SS to 1SS and then add back in the new engine and add in a safety feature and add in a bracket that holds an extra airbag. It only gets interesting to me when they do a 1LT vs 1LT. Then are they comparing model to model with V6? or are they talking 1LT 3.6L vs 1LT 2.0T? Trust me, Mark Reuss does not want to be having to explain himself later. And as my current boss says, "if you are explaining.............you are losing". And keep in mind, GM has already given us SAE certified HP. Much more than the "at least 450 HP" that I expected. The surprise here will be the weight. GM has clearly put $$ and technology into the Camaro. Even I was skeptical they would do MORE than for the ATS/CTS. I am now doubting my own assumptions here. It would not surprise me if this is the big number that makes the car. That and FE. Keep in mind, GM took the Malibu, made it significantly bigger and dropped 300 pounds. The new Malibu weighs what a Cruze weighs. Stay tunes on this one. I'm expecting a bombshell. Not a 201 pound bombshell either. More like 250 plus on a 1SS. Fingers crossed.

I think the new auto tranny is even lighter than the manual now. The curb on a 2015 auto 2ss is like ~3970. ( gm states the 1ss auto weighs 3946) so that's going to be even easier to hit for the new auto. I also notice people keep saying less brakes like it's only a negative sign... Anyone ever think it could be a sign the car truly is significantly lighter. ( as in it doesn't need larger ones... Not just for weight savings)...? The braking on even the standard SS will be sufficient. Excellent probably if I had to guess. |
