The new rear bushing mount is to reduce deflection (added stability with the mounting), appears similar to me at lease what MGW did.

If you just have the handle/lever replacement, you still have the soft rubber mount on the rear of the shifter contributing to the sloppy feel of the stock shifter. See in the pics how much it is allowed to move.

All OEM short throw/Hurst shifters use the soft rubber mount. All lever replacements also use the stock mount. The only way to upgrade further prior to these mounts was a full billet type shifter replacement.

How painful is the install? I assume it happens from below versus through the dust boot.

yes, similar to a full shifter install but not quite as bad. i was able to get mine in with exhaust and all in place but results may vary.
