OK, honestly, if you're already thinking depreciation before you get the vehicle,' just wait a year and buy one for 4-5K discount with 10K miles.

I personally had an order for a 2016 SS and cancelled it because I really, no matter how bad I want it, just can't justify a $40K+ Camaro. I just can't do it no matter how badly I want it.

I am going to buy a used LS2 GTO for $14K, drive it for a year or 2 then pick up a low mileage 2016 2SS for low 30's, high 20's.

The 400-HP GTO will be enough fun to hold me over.

Hey Zack,

It dosent really matter unless you plan on selling it in the next couple of years. My opinion is that when you spend as much money on a car its worth keeping for at least 5-7 years and at that point it wont make a difference. Anyways you just got your car so enjoy it man! Some of us dont have the means of getting one yet (me) so go drive the hell out of it.

I think you will lose $5K the first week and 5k by the time it's a year old as long as you don't run the miles up to fast. This is the sweet spot to buy not to sell.

I can give you a good idea.I bought a 2013 SS/RS msrp of 42750 I paid 40000 put 1800 miles on it in one year and got tired of the piece of junk and traded it for a 2014 Silverado, the dealer, same one I bought the car from gave me 33000 so in one year not including the taxes paid a 7000 dollar loss almost 20% so that 20% rule is just about spot on.

Sadly plan on a hit of 40% or more of original MSRP on actual trade in value after one year of ownership on a one year old model. In general, unless it's rare or in high demand the higher the MSRP or the more options on the unit the bigger the hit you take. Also demand, the season and the amount of incentives on new models at the time can play a role in used car values.

In general V8 models will hold their value somewhat better over the long run, but in the short term the SS will take a larger initial hit than the base models. Sadly no Camaro model outside of a rare one holds it's value well.

Price and depreciation aside, I think this is a great plan! I’ve owned a 2006 GTO, a 2010 Camaro SS and now a 2017 Camaro SS. I think the experience of getting to drive each, seeing and feeling the gradual improvements and having something to look forward to after owning each is a blast. Stick to your plan, it’s a good one.

Resale value of Camaros is not good- in my opinion the weakest aspect of the car. The V6 models take the biggest hit. My 2LT I paid close to 34K. If traded it in right now I doubt I would get 20K for it- probably 18K. So I would say almost 50% depreciation once you drive it off the lot. Probably a little less for SS's- maybe 35-40%. What is good is if you want to buy a slightly used one- you can get a good deal- if you can find a good one gently driven. So my plan is to keep mine forever!

While I totally agree that used Camaros depreciate a lot faster than any of us would like to think, I believe you are being a good bit too hard on the current trade in value of your 2017 2LT. Current NADA average trade value of a 2LT with A8 and RS package with 15K miles in average condition is around $25.5K. Average auction price on the car right now is around $24.5K. I agree an honest $25K on a trade is unrealistic but I would think depending on your market in Florida you should do far better than 18K.
