ET Reduction Stock 20's to 17" Weld RTS (or equivalent)

Hey all..

Just wondering if anyone out there has done back to back track visits with the only variables being weather and switching from the stock 20's to a set of weld's, bogarts, or equivalent slick/skinny setup?

I'm just curious to get an idea of what getting rid of ~100 lbs in rotational mass picks up for you at the strip in e/t

I tried poking around for my answer and didn't find much -

You could see a .5 sec improvement with that wheel/tire setup.
Watched a car (only mod was it had been perviously tuned) go from low 13s to 12.6s by switching to 17"wheels/MT drag radials with skinnies up front.

Rule is every 100lb you pick up a tenth. I switched to 17in welds and went from 6.89 to 6.78. 60 went from a 1.53 to 1.49. Runs were on the same day.

That rule of thumb is valid for dead weight in the car. For rotating mass, it's a bit different since you're expending energy the entire way down the strip to accelerate that mass - so arguably you would see a greater improvement than with static weight removal, and in the 1/4 vs the 1/8th.

I would've expected a bit more improvement.. have you run the car in the 1/4? Thanks for sharing your results!

Any others have real world results?

I picked .03 in the 60 ft and .12 in the 1/4 mile going from 20's to 18" drag radials and 18" skinny's. It went from 12.12 to 12.00 ET and both tires were hooked up (no spin). Done on the same day!

Interesting to see that some are gaining a significant chunk of time while others only a small fraction.

It's driver experience.

Generally speaking, whatever time you take off your 60ft time you can double that and subtract it from you et.

Also, another reason for the smaller wheels is a taller sidewall. This allows the tire to "wrap up" and spring the car forward off the starting line.

my buddy has ran a 10.7 or 10.8 and consistand 11.0 or lil better. but he put this stockers on to race me since i was on stockers , best he could do was 11.6. but he did go from dr to st. which i would say is harder to do then going from st. to dr. on the same night .

The reason some are getting a big gain in time, it's not from the weight reduction which is mainly what your question was. The guys getting the big gains like .60 sec was Bc they went from a stock tire or street radial to a drag radial. So hooking up vs spinning is most of their gain.

If you were to put a drag radial on an 17"rim that weighs the same as stock, THEN you turned around and did another drag radial that weighed the differences you get with like say a WELD RTS, the weight reduction in rotational mass alone would bet you about .1-.2 tenths in the quarter.

So make sure you factor out traction if your just wanting to compare the gains of just the weight savings from drag wheels and skinnies.

incorrect, but thats a pretty common myth.

generally the amount of time taken off your 60' is the exact same amount of time taken off your 1/4 mile.

It's probably mainly because of misleading articles such as this, that the myth you reference is so commonly believed as being fact.
