I've always put hair ties on the gear shifter, at least one in every car we own. I've never carried a purse, if I can't carry something on me, then I don't need it that bad. My son keeps a hair clip on one of his holy shit bars in his back seat and keeps a variety of hair ties on that for his female passengers. I'm both impressed with his ingenuity and thoughtfulness and slightly uneasy with how many times I've noticed those hair ties have moved around on the clip.
