Another "what gear" thread

Looking for some wisdom from some experts on assisting me with what gears would help me make my car more drivable. I have a M6 with a 454 under the hood. Even in first gear I can't drive slow because the motor wants to go. Minimum speed in 1st right now is about 30km/h. I can't use 6th gear unless I'm over 105km/h. My car is a DD and wont see the track so I'm looking for the best drivable gear.

Thanks in advance

I'm no expert, but I can tell you that higher ratio gears will lower your 6th gear's required speed...

yeah given that you have a 454 your power band is different from most, so hard to determine exactly what will work for you, but a 3.73-3.90 sounds about right.

ya that's why I started this thread because I knew my car would be a little different then most. I suspect that with 4.11 I would start spinning tires a lot. I hope someone with a 454 can share some experiance

If you go 4.11s get an extra set of rear tires in the deal.

Actually, get a couple extra set of gears becuase you might shatter all of the 4.11's

Seriously though if you want some gears that are not weaker than the originals then get the LPE 3.70 or LPE 3.90's.

While 4.10 gears would really be nice off the line...you can get more out of a 3.90 for overall performance and reliability....either way you're going to kill your tires!! HAHA

I dont see why you need gear with the power and torque your pulling with a DD. I would keep the 3.45's if it was me since your not hitting the track, but if ya gotta have it i would go with 3.70's from LPE and save yourself $200 or so over their 3.90's.

I'm trying to use gears to change my RPM to make my car more streetable. If it wont help much gonig to a 3.73 or 3.90 then I'll leave it stock

Not sure I understand the comments above. Ok, so an 8000 horsepower Top Fuel dragster doesn't have to think about gear ratios? Gears simply make more or less out of your engine speed...they don't care about horsepower.

If your tires spin, look into a better tire, or suspension update.

I PROMISE, a lower gear ratio (higher than stock) will dramatically improve acceleration, and the way the car drives around town...

Ask people who have them and see what they say.

My goals are to be able to drive slower in first gear. To do this I need to get higher RPM at a lower speed other wise the car lopes
