I just read this whole thread and thanks camaro 1 for clearing up the total confusion, it was funny how everyone could not comprehend what you were describing. and as far as the idea of not fooling with this for 100,000 mi. does not compute for me at all. I will not wait that long to service my trans, plus what if someone puts a trans cooler or swaps out the radiator for a heavyduty be-cool radiator, and has to undo the trans lines and loses fluid like I'm about to do. I do apreciate the op for trying to share but if they dont know what there doing they should not write a diy post. thanks again to camaro 1, great write up.

I am going to get one of these kits so I can fill/check the trans fluid.

If you are going to take the time to change the fluid why not just drop the pan, get all the fluid out, clean the pan and magnet and change the filter. I upgraded my filter. This one has a pick up opening almost twice the size as OE. This eliminates any pump cavitation at high RPM.

Stock Filter.

Upgraded Filter

This is what I use to fill 6L80E's. You fill the bucket, then pump the handle. It pressurizes the bucket then will fill the trans. Much easier than doing it one quart at a time. It also comes with various adapters for different filling locations.

What about the fluid in the tq converter doesn't the car needs to be running to circulate that out.

You would need a fluid exchange machine to get all the fluid out of the converter. It is still important to clean the magnet in the pan and change the filter.

What is the upgraded filter part number? Where did you get it?
Thanks.

I prefer to do everything myself so I know 100% that it was done correctly.

It is only recommended once every 100k miles... but spirited driving or towing (for towing vehicles) needs changed around 40-50k miles... Depends how the vehicle has been driven and what temps the transmission fluid has suffered through.

I've seen burnt trans fluid on cars with less than 35k miles on them. I prefer to keep my car in excellent condition and change diff & trans every 10k miles.

A couple of thing. The L99 does not have a dip stick or a drain plug. I replaced my tranny pan with one that is larger and also has a drain plug. I also installed a dip stick so I can fill it from the top. There is a rubber plug on top of the trans that you can remove to to fill it up. The best way to change the fluid is to remove the pan. The plug on the bottom of the pan is a level plug only. With the car level and fluid hot you fill until it comes out of the plug.

Good luck.
