Z/28 History Picture

Had to take a phone pic from an old picture book I have on Camaro History.

This is the #6 Mark Donohue-Penske Z/28 that was so dominant and gave the Z it's heritage:

Love this kind of stuff!

YES!!!! You get it!

This car was not made out of thin air. The OG-riginal DZ-302 motor and the SCCA racing really was what made the Z so special. Captivates the imagination.

Mad props to the new Z/28 owners, but understand this baby has weight of history behind her.

I have a TRans Am Racing book, about the cars. I was considering trying to hunt dow and old '69 or '70 bidy and build a Trams Am replica race car. I was looking at the historical races. I had read that the car had to be built to the original specs for the year, but when I looked at the Trans Am car class, they only except the actual race cars, no replicas. I still may do it and just run in the NASA American Iron class. You can build a 302 using a 327 block and a 283 crank. The original specs were a 4.00in bore and a 3.00 strock.

I've also wondered about getting a hold of a modern LS style block, something along the lines of the LR4, 4.8L and reworking it to a 4.00in bore and a 3.00 inch stroke to build a modern LS version of the 302 to see what it could do.

The LS2 already has a 4.00in bore. If I could find a rotating assembly to fit it with a 3.00in stroke and a 10.0:1 compression to fit it, that would spec out to the same as the original 302. Hmmmm.

I like what GM did for the 2000 SEMA 302 Camaro Concept. I wonder if the 5.3 block with a crank from the 4.8 or even one from the older LT1 based 4.3 V8 from the early 90's would work to make a modern LS based high revving 302.

Ahh, sorry but the original 302's compression ratio was 11:1 .
Of course you would have to get a custom cam turned for the engine, unless you don't want the original specs, or unless you have a spare as I do

Why go with a smaller engine? As soon as the SCCA changed the rules the Z28 went up to 350 CI.

Depends on what year replica you were working on in my opinion, I don't think that rule change was in effect until 1970.

The american iron series in the NASA still restricts the displacement to 5.0L. Most of the Camaros in that series are running the old 305ci. You can update to newer engines as long as you meet displacement rules. The bore and stroke of the 302 was part of the reason that it was able to rev so high. I also think it would be cool from a heritage stand point to see what it would be like if the original Trans Am rules were applied today. It's just a what would happen senario.
