Much of what you guys are asking for is very plausible. If, only for a moment, consider a Z/28 that starts life as a standard 1LE with a package, per se, that has GM’s LT1 hot cam+cnc heads on a car with DSSV shocks and a square tire (305) setup. That shouldn’t bump the price too high but, it would make for a fun factory car priced in between a 1LE and a ZL1.
I completely understand that the GM hot cam would never be found in a production vehicle but, a variant with less chop, might. This is essentially asking them to put the LT376/535 engine in the car.

IMO, there's only one slot left empty in the Camaro line up. It would be a car that would follow the example of the Corvette Grand Sport.
The Z/28 would have all the appearance and track goodies found on the ZL1 1LE, with the N/A LT1 engine. Price it between the SS 1LE and the ZL1 and it would be in a great slot for those that want something a little special, but not really looking for all the power or the LT4, or just prefer N/A over all. I'm sure that there would be a good collection of people that would go for a car like this. (They make the rear wing an option on the car, however, or at least offer a choice) |

They could still come out with a drag race version with a VIN.

I get the Z/28 to Grand Sport comparison. I still feel like both should have some sort of engine upgrade over the base V8 versions. The C4 Grand Sport went from LT-1 to LT-4 with a bump in power. If you really want to go with heritage, the Grand Sport should be like the ZL1 1LE and become practically a race car, just like the originals were. The Z06 option would add components to the production cars to qualify for those parts for the racing world. The Grand Sport was never a production car initially, strictly racing thoroughbred. I would be perfectly happy with a "hot cam" or "head/cam" equipped SS 1LE as a Z/28, with the wider fenders of the ZL1(therefore wider tires of the ZL1 1LE) yet keep the SS bumper/grill.

It wouldn't surprise me if they waited until the last year of the generation.

Heard yesterday from a high end independant car/motorcycle sales dealership owner that GM is making a Z/28 in 2018.... we'll see I guess. Cant always believe what you hear.

Would make sense for GM to wait for new Shelby GT 500 to come out and see where it performs versus ZL1 and ZL1 1LE - if they decide a response is needed - then maybe a Z/28 comes along or maybe they don a new Camaro model the ZR1 with more power than ZL1.

I believe the next year and a half belongs to the corvette and the facelift for the camaro. I doubt that GM is even thinking about a Z28 right now.
