Just me or does this sound like BS? (Tire repair incident)

Had a very slow leak on the SS, needed to go out of town Sunday, so I found a Sears auto center open, only place open with time to do anything, other than walmart which I refuse to let them touch anything.

I've never used a sears for tire repairs before, but what the heck. Took the wheel in myself, dropped it off and waited. and waited, and waited. Only person waiting on anything. I finally started poking around the shop as much as I could since "you cant be back here" guy was gaurding the area. Asked what was in it, and was told nothing, just a small puncture. I was then informed they had to redo it because it didn't hold the first time.

They plug-patched it. Twice. Same hole that had nothing in it still, was barely leaking with nothing in it, plug-patched. Twice. And STILL leaking now. Pretty sure tire is trashed, plus I won't run a plugged tire anyway, especially a high speed rated tire with no spare... I ended up just taking my truck on the trip and left the SS in my garage.

What would you do? Live with it and buy a new tire, fight them for replacement? Come here and vent about it and buy a tire anyway? They tried to tell me after all this mess that its standard protocol for Sears auto centers to plug-patch any tire repairs that come in. Which really sounds like BS. I was a tire tech for a while at an independent shop, and I would have with out a doubt talked to the customer before shoving a plug or plug-patch in any tire. Let alone a ZR rated tire.

lol.. sorry to hear that. i just picked up some 315 rear and 285 fronts (99% sure on those front sizes, 100% sure on the rear) and hadnt gone any where since it time to strip and wax the heck out of it.

Nail in right front tire. no insurance on it, since it wasnt offered.. got lucky.

That blows OP, sorry to hear. I used to work at Sears a few years ago, as a sales associate, not in the automotive department. I've heard enough complaints working there I trust them about as much as I do Walmart I do find it BS they didn't ask you first though. I'd fight them on it. Too expensive not to really. Good luck, hope all works out for you!

I would never on my life use sears for my car. The thought alone gives me shudders down my spine........

The only way to repair the high speed rated tires is from within the tire and plug/patch is a top way to do it.
The tire manufacturer has specs on how far in the tread area from the sidewall a repair is allowed - and what size hole is repairable.
If done properly the repair will usually work and be permanent, although sometimes may not maintain original speed rating.

Needed to have that done on the SS back tire and contacted 3 locations before I found one that both knew how to take the huge tire off that rim and also had credentials doing that type of repair a number of times.
Careful prep work needs to be done to the inside tire liner before the plug/patch is installed. OP likely had a Rookie attempting it.

Isn't plug/patch the standard repair method now?

Go to a tire center like Goodyear or Mavis and have them look at it. Insist on a patch, not a plug. I've patched so many tires and have gone thousands of miles on them without leaks!

Not everyone is good at everything. To be honest, I've never had my car repaired by a Sears service center; That tells you what I think of their service.

I would have just bought a new tire and been done with it. If it was for my truck I would just plug it myself. I have never had a plug leak that I have done myself.

Always keep plugs around or fix a flat for emegency situations. Good temp fix till you xan get it done right or replaced.

What would I do? I'd buy a new tire, these are high performance cars with high performance tires, why mess around with safety or reliability? $350 or so to buy a new is worth having piece of mind in my opinion.
