My GMC truck came with it in 2007. Whatever the trial period was. The truck had its own Onstar phone number I then had to give to anyone that I wanted to talk with hands free. Plus at least at that time the only hands free functionality in the truck was through the onstar. So I couldnt even sync my phones to the truck. I doubt thats the case on our 2020 Camaro but if it is I will be as pissed off as I was in 2007.
Also the concept of them having real time telemetry from my vehicle is a risk I dont want.
I tried to remove the module from the truck and found that they placed it so deep in the dash that the dashboard would have to be removed to access it.
I find all of this distasteful and the cost a ridiculous inflation.
If it remained free I might find some of the features a minor value. But in 12 years ownership of my GMC I never used it and never wished I had it.

Used it on my 2012 truck since I bought it in 2015 for the Safety/Accident reporting and remote app access.
But it was only $179 a year. Also got the diagnostic reports as part of that. I renewed in two years ago for $199.

Now they want $400 for same thing. So nope Im done. Greed bites you in the ass everytime.

I have 4 GM vehicles and have the basic remote access plan on all of them to allow use of the phone app to control all of them. I also like the vehicle locate feature - can see where each car is at any time and also helpful if you park in a city somewhere and need to know precisely what block you parked on. One of the cars is a Cadillac and it came with 3 years of full boat service included. The others are Chevy, Buick, GMC that came with 1 month free I believe. I think it costs $9/month for the 3 non-Cadillac cars.

I've debated adding the safety/protection plan on the Camaro because I no longer have run flats and there is no spare. But it is $29/month I think for that package which seems expensive. I may just get AAA and cover all cars/drivers.

your insurance - that you already pay for - almost certainly has roadside assistance.

unless you got some really garbage kind of insurance company.

but pay for it twice with aaa and/or onstar. Having onstar for 4 cars is like not having amazon prime + netflix + hulu + more. at some point, insurance isn't worth the tradeoff - and that's all onstar is, another insurance premium.

i'll take the streaming services, as i'll make more use of them.

Like the commercial says, "How About Noooooooooooo." The one time I used it, I spent twenty minutes waiting on the phone only to be transferred to somewhere overseas to a guy trying to help me with a Colorado pick up. The minor issue there is I was in a Corvette. ON STAR sucks. I also just bought a Silverado on Tuesday and I am hesitant to touch that button even for the free trial. They only seem more interested in getting your credit card on file more than anything else.

I use the hotspot feature, that I like a lot have it in all my cars. The other features I dont need.

In their defense a buddy of mine had his CTS V stolen they were able to tell the cops where it was and they even turned it off at a light. Dumb ass's were busted red handed. That would be a positive in my book.

The data you "buy" for hotspot can not be moved from the vehicle, though. You're better off from a value perspective to get a device from a carrier specifically for hotspot services and move it from car-to-car.

very valid point and we have kicked it around the data plan in the AMG is super expensive unlike the GM offering.

Well, that's exactly everyone has to deal with in my neck of woods. Did I mention there is also no other choice?

A bit less garbage now, but still garbage.

I found a few perks to be useful when doing long drives such as the onboard weather app and the data plan. I almost never call Onstar though. Everything you can get from them you can also find on Google.

My insurance gives me a $180 a year discount if I have Onstar so if I didn’t have it I’d have to pay my insurance the $180 so may as well get it. This year I saved $30 since I only paid $150 for Onstar safety and security plan . I also found out for some reason the state police come faster if I use OnStar instead of my phone. I used to go to work in the middle of the night and needed to call them a few times. Plus the stolen car thing. And if you get in a accident and nobody sees you especially at night and your unconscious you could end up dead.
So it’s up for you to decide if it’s worth it. If you go to work or come home in the middle of the night I’d say it’s worth it, it’s more dangerous out there in the night than the day, lot of idiots driving drunk, without lights on, running lights stop signs etc.

I love the unlimited data, I got them down to $15 a month for unlimited. It works great for the Spotify and other apps

It could be worth it if you do lots of Hi-way or long distance trips. Not worth it to me because my driving is mostly local and occasional trips.
