Need Help to DeTune My New ZL1

I know this is a Crazy Request but... I'm Serious !

I'm 64 and have had a lot of different high performance cars, flown airplanes.. helicopters, etc. . However, I bought a ZL1 on Sat. and have a 18 YO that is driving the car with my supervision. I have a camera system in the car that record's his speed, rpm, etc. . I had installed this (camera) in his 1st car, a 2012 LT Camaro (V-6); the camera kept in him in-line. He did... A OK with this camera ratting him out & he turn's in the SD Memory Disk after every trip.

However, this new car (ZL1) is just too powerful & quick and he can & will get in trouble if he smash's the gas on.... wet road... dirt.. rough road.. anything like that. It's a rag top to boot .... so that's an issue (roll over) too.

I need to have the car (but how) detuned, I estimate about 45 % or so. His V-6 was 323 HP or something like that. If I had the engine de-rated to 65 %.. this will be around 377 HP. I was thinking that a -- Fuel Rail Adjustment (drop pressure) would be the simplest... then RPM (set down to RPM X??) Limiter as a 2nd choice.

Really, I made a mistake buying this car (in a way) and should have waited a few more years. However, I have some health issues and this added to my decision to get the car for him (my one & only). If I get his ZL1 Detuned.. it should work out.. he was doing fine with his V-6 Camaro.

2nd thing.. perhaps a little wilder yet. This car is a convertible and the danger of roll over is a real problem. I've had rag tops all my life and it never bothered me about roll over. However, I'm thinking of him. I'd like to Add a Nice (chrome) Roll Over Bar in this ZL1. I think it would be well worth it; if Installed... may/ would make the difference between -- life, death, or serious injury. I would like to hear from someone that has added a roll bar to their car or know of someone that did.

Thanks'

Avery

Trust him.
He'll hurt himself with 377hp if he wants to

I took delivery of my ZL1 at 21 y/o. Have yet to be pulled over or anything.

Edit - but if you really want to, just take the belt off the supercharger

I was 20 years old and just got back from a combat pump in Afghanistan. I haven't had no problems at all.. It's all about trust man. If you don't trust him then he shouldn't be driving it.

Detuning will void your warranty...as silly as that sounds...
And if you don't trust him, don't give him the keys. 4 cyl Hondas in the wrong hands are just as lethal as a ZL1.

Exactly.

To the OP, you sound like a typical extreme leftist employing a forced-hand solution but reaching a new zenith of nonsense-political correctness with this "issue". E.g, "I love him so much I bought him the ZL1. But the power is too much and so I love him so much I'll have it de-tuned yet he will still experience... the car." This is the kind of skewed logic and outlandish emotional projection that's driving the country into an era of phony ultra-sensitivity and social neediness.

Guide him towards the correct behavior. If you are so concerned that he's not going to be safe that you have to record him, then don't let him drive the car.

Show him, learn him and trust him

Hey

What i think: in switzerland we dont have racetrack, but we can make on old airports and special tracks driveexperience. Take him to one of this, and show him the power of this car. For me, this was the best lesson when i was young.
To see, how the car accelerate, how long its the brakedistance and how fast the car drive. Let him look this from inside an from outside

And each car can be rally dangerous on the street

Maybe a tuner can put it in "granny mode" (not sure how "slow they can make it), you dont want to just cut the fuel. Limiting rpms is good, but it still makes power at low rpms. Maybe swap to a different pulley to slow the blower down (probably have to get one custom made).

You have a lucky kid (hope he appreciates you) A v6 camaro is a great 1st car...not my kid and not my money, but why the hell would you buy a zl1 in the first place, keep it for yourself

Trade it in on an SS and give him the extra cash to go get some driving lessons.

I'm afraid I have to agree with the others

If you can't trust him to drive it without de-tuning it then he shouldn't be driving it at all.

He could be just as reckless and in as much danger in a de-tuned ZL1 as in a regular ZL1 - it really makes no difference at all.

You either trust him or you don't, and it sounds like you don't

Sounds like a typical liberal response to a question...
