That gap where no Camaro was produced from 2003 through 2009 is sad.

GM really f'd it up there in my view.

If these numbers are right I can see why GM decided to kill the Camaro after 2002. The 4th gen Camaro was getting trounced by the Mustang. I didn't know they were selling just a fraction of Mustang volumes. I assumed sales tapered off because GM didn't keep it fresh, but the 4th gen never sold well.

I'm confused about the 2014 numbers. Pretty sure Camaro outsold the Mustang in 2014.

Hahaha literally the same thing I was thinking

Late 70's cars look older than mid-60's cars IMO

Yup, me! Had the 5.0 and stupid trx wheels. That lil car was a rocket! Totaled it into a tree backwards. The rear on those car sucked. I'm not partial to ford or Chevy... Like both, but IMO 5th and 6th gen are much nicer than the newer mustangs.

Then you should include all of the Cougar and Capri sales made during certain years to the Mustang column, as they were built on the same platform as the Mustang.

Let's not bring logic and fairness into this.

That graph messed up on the 2014 sales part. The Camaro outsold it, even though the release of the new 2015 model year Mustang helped to gain ground near the end of 2014.

Quote:
• Second-best year for fifth-gen Camaro

• Mustang was on a roll at the end of 2014

• Challenger growth continues in sixth consecutive year

2014 was the fifth consecutive year in which the Chevrolet Camaro outsold its two key rivals in the United States.

2015, however, could present far different results.

Leading up to the sixth-generation Mustang’s arrival, the Camaro led the Mustang by nearly 11,000 sales through the first ten months of 2014.

But Ford sold 8,728 Mustangs in America in November, a 62% year-over-year improvement, basically double the number of Camaros sold that month.

By the end of December – when Mustang sales shot up 66% to 9,511 units – the gap was closed to 3,662 units. That was nearly on par with 2013, when the Camaro ended the year 3,381 sales ahead.

While much of the Mustang’s late-2014 success can be attributed to the hyped MY2015 car’s arrival, these big numbers did appear at the onset of winter. Prime Mustang buying season typically revolves around the months of May and June. In 2012, for instance, the last time Ford sold more than 80,000 Mustangs in America, one-quarter of the nameplate’s total year-end sales occurred during May and June.

In other words, we may not grasp the car’s full potential for marketplace success in its home market until the end of 2015’s second quarter.

Meanwhile, sales of the fifth-generation Camaro climbed to the second-highest level yet: up 7% compared with 2013, down just 2% from the 2011 high-water mark. Sales of the Dodge Challenger increased for a sixth consecutive year. Admittedly, the gains were marginal. But Challenger volume was down 10% through the end of September before monthly year-over-year gains of 27%, 51%, and 72% closed out the year.

The Challenger and Mustang weren’t the only cars to power the category to a massive December, either. The Camaro, though only second in the segment at the end of the year, shot up 32% in December, indicating that if the newer Mustang and Challenger stole any sales from the Chevy, GM managed to find many more elsewhere. The trio jumped 55% to 21,077 units in December, equal to 3.1% of the overall passenger car market.

Mustang Sales Boom in December, Camaro Still Wins 2014 Muscle Car Race
Quote:
The introduction of the 2015 Mustang allowed Ford to grab the claim of having the bestselling muscle car in the US in December 2014, but the surge in Mustang sales came too late to prevent the Chevrolet Camaro from being the bestselling muscle car for 2014 – marking the 5th straight victory for the Camaro since being introduced for the 2010 model year.

All year long, we have been expected a big spike in Mustang sales following Ford’s release of the 2015 models, but the Chevrolet Camaro had spent the year building what ended up being a very large lead through the summer and fall. This meant that when the 2015 Mustang hit the market with full force in November, it would have a tough task of closing the gap in annual muscle car sales. Unfortunately for Ford, that lead proved to be a bit too big, as even with December being a fantastic month for Mustang sales, the Camaro still took the title of America’s bestselling muscle car in 2014.

2015 Mustang Booms in December

For the second straight month, the 2015 Mustang has helped Ford claim the monthly muscle car sales title, moving 9,511 units. This marked the Mustang’s second-best sales month of 2014, trailing only May, when 9,761 new Mustangs were sold. This strong December allowed the Mustang to badly beat the Chevrolet Camaro in the final monthly sales race of the year, but the 2,883 unit gap still caused the Mustang to fall some 3,600 units short of the Camaro in the annual sales race.

The Camaro Wins the Annual Sales Title

Although the Ford Mustang sold far more units in December 2014, General Motors sold enough copies of the Chevrolet Camaro to secure the 2014 annual muscle car sales title. This is the 5th straight title for the Camaro and since being introduced in 2009 for the 2010 model year, the Mustang has yet to beat this modern Camaro in annual sales.

In December, GM sold 6,628 Camaro coupes and convertibles. While this is more than 2,800 units behind the Mustang, it is a very strong month for the Camaro and one of the best Decembers in recent years. This helped the Camaro reach a total of 86,297 sales in 2014, which is 3,662 more units than Ford sold Mustangs.

Strong Outlook for Ford in 2015

While the Chevrolet Camaro has claimed its 5th straight annual muscle car sales title, things are looking better than ever for the Ford Mustang to break the streak in 2015. The 2015 Mustang is already selling very well, accounting for roughly 90% of Mustang sales in the past two months in colder months that are typically slow sales months for muscle cars. These trends of stronger than normal sales should continue into the spring and with the warmer weather should come bigger Mustang sales in the northern US states. This should all amount to steady Mustang sales growth over the next 6 months and that could allow Ford to finally beat the Chevrolet Camaro in the annual muscle car sales race in 2015.

Compared to 2012 and 2013, the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger both posted the best annual sales numbers in the past three years. The Mustang posted better numbers in 2012 than it did in 2014, but as a whole, the muscle car segment continues to grow and the introduction of the next generation Camaro should help those numbers climb through the next year as well.
