1500 Mile Road Trip in the V6
Just got home from a nearly 1500 mile Thanksgiving road trip in the 17 1LT and thought I'd give a little trip report.
Our trip started in Southeastern Washington and took us to Salt Lake City, Park City, all around the Salt Lake area, and back to Washington. First off, the LT worked very well as a touring car! The ride was great and my wife and I found it very comfortable. I'm 5'10" and 210 lbs, my wife 5'6 130, and we both agreed the ride was very pleasant and comfortable, with road noise on par with the BMW I traded for this Camaro, and even over rough roads the ride quality was fine. The cloth seats were actually great, and allowed for long hours in the car without a need for frequent stops. Of course the cabin is pretty tight with limited storage, so you have to be somewhat tolerant when looking for places to put all the stuff you end up with on a road trip, but we really had no problems. The back seat was full, as was the trunk! The V6 with its manual trans ran perfectly and loved the road! Washington and Oregon's interstate speed limit is 70 while Idaho and Utah vary between 75 and 80, with 80 being the majority of our trip. I averaged 27.4 mpg for the entire 1500 mile trip, which I thought was great, however, what really impressed me was the trip home where I set the cruise on 90 mph and left it there for nearly 400 miles, with occasional areas of 87-88 mph, but also several short bursts well over 100 mph, and the car returned 29.2 mpg for the return trip! That V6 never felt stressed and absolutely loves to cruise! Overall I am very happy with the LT! I would love to take my 2SS on that run but it's already nestled comfortably in the garage for the winter. The V6 was awesome and I'm very happy with it as a touring car! |

Glad to hear you're enjoying the 6! I know I do every time I get behind the wheel. Unfortunately now she's in hibernation for the winter.

Glad you are liking your one LT with V6 and MT! I sometimes regret getting the A8 but the exact car I wanted- options, color, wheels, etc. had the A8 so i went for it. Your gas mileage seems really good- I suspect the MT is better than the A8. Best I got so far is 24, steady speed going 70.

The SS will be largely the same but with torque and sound. My M6 averaged around 24-27mpg over about 3000 miles, 2500 of which was all highway. Really happy with it after coming from a 2010 and feeling very comfortable in that on the same trips.

Good report. Glad to see another Camaro owner loving his car. They are a treat.
I've been using my 17 1SS more the past few months. Struck me how silly it was to keep it in the garage when I could be using it. They were built to be enjoyed. |

I agree. I can't imagine letting the Camaro sit in the garage and not driving it. I have about 1200 KMs on it since I put on the winter tires on the 15th.

I think my 2SS A8 would probably have done very well for mileage on the same trip since I’ve seen 30 mpg average during freeway cruising, but when I drive the SS I couldn’t really care less about mileage! Not what I bought the SS for! 😜 |

The LT will get the winter duty. I bought a set of Blizzaks for it and I’m hoping it will do fine for our typical winter here in the Pacific Northwest. The SS however gets to play garage queen for the winter since I have other options for my wife to drive and don’t need to subject the Hyper Blue beauty to the harsh conditions! 😉

Interesting mileage numbers, I also just completed a 1500 mile trip to N.C. and back. Drove over to Deal Gap and Tail of the Dragon while I was up there.
I've never been able to get that kind of mileage out of my 2LT M6 since I got her in January. Best I got was an indicated 27.2 (26.3 actual) on the first tank doing about 70-75. Got worse from there due to the elevation changes headed into the Smokies. I've also never attempted to do any continuous running at 90 on the highways down here as I like to avoid tickets. If what you are saying has any validity I may just have to try driving @ 70ish in fifth gear. According to my gear chart the engine would be in the same RPM range (@90 in 6th) and would be seeing significantly less aerodynamic drag! Logically, it makes no sense, but WTH.

Great review and sounds like a fun trip. This helps balance out the usual comments I get about my V6: it sucks, it's gay, it's not a muscle car, it's not a Camaro, I can't afford a real car, etc.
