rail dust on white cars
hi - i got my car used certified in december.
its a 2013. 7k miles. washed it today and noticed some rust spots. Now i'm googling rail dust. is clay bar the solution? Will dealer do anything? I'm gonna bring it to them this week. Last edited by 2MCHPWR; 11-12-2017 at 07:11 AM. |

That is not rail dust, it is "normal white car maintenance rust". The rust is coming from your brakes and is something that requires normal detailing to remove. Don't waste the dealer's time with this.

Wash the spots with Dawn Blue Dish Soap, then clay it, then follow it up with a proper polish (if needed, I doubt a compound is needed with such little miles), get a sealant and a good coat of wax on the car. You should be able to prevent them from returning once you give it a proper detail and maintain the paint well.

when i bought my car used from a dealer that was under construction, the paint felt like it had been sandblasted, very gritty feeling. I started out with a "fall out" cleaner then clay bar and then polish. Came out nice and smooth.

IronX. Not too hard to use... but it smells bad... use outdoors
Rail dust and/or metallic brake dust and/or crap from a nearby construction project |

Try the acid based gels/spray cleaners first. Try to get as most off as possible before clay.
I had a dark blue 4th gen that had bad rail dust. I started with clay, at the internets numerous suggestions of how great clay was. I used copius amounts of clay lube. Thought I had done great until I looked at the car under bright lights... the iron particles dragged a million scratches into the car. The clay felt like it had miny diamonds embedded in it. Had to pay a pro detailer to wetsand to and buff. He mentioned... yeah, never clay over iron particles... unless you want to turn your clay into sandpaper. |

Carpro IronX is excellent stuff hands down. I had Auto Spa to come over and do my vehicles which one is white and was full of rail dust. He got all of it out with IronX and then coated the car with Cquartz finest.

I used to mobile detail and will give a +1 to ironx
Clay will also work but it might take a few times I have a work pick up truck that is never maintained and it had really bad real dust when I first bought it. Overtime believe it or not it goes away...providing its not exposed to more fallout Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I don't have this on my ZL1 but I drive a 2014 GMC Sierra that's white and if I get up close I have stuff like that all over it too. Not sure if I have the time/want to put the effort into hand doing a 2500 truck, do most detailers do this kind of work?

A detailer will be happy to do the work but it will probably be on the high side in cost...Lazy ass...lol

Yeah, call me crazy or lazy but when Saturday finally rolls around I don't wanna be out in my drive way going over a 20 foot long vehicle with a fine tooth comb. Lol.

Never hurts to pay for something you don't feel like doing yourself. That's what some people decide to do.
A lot of detailers charge around $300 for a full exterior detail. Those cheaper places (like a $60 quick detail) is mostly just them washing your car, hand-drying it, and using a quick detailer spray and spray wax.

I have a white Jeep Grand Cherokee as a daily driver and I've used this (there are a couple of other options out there as well). Use this, rinse follow up with a clay bar and then a paint sealant. You can wax over the sealant too after a week. Works very good , short of Xpel over the whole car.
