Torisional chassis Dynamics ( coupe vs convertible )

There is a large x brace underneath the car and an additional strut tower brace on the convertibles that adds a significant amount of weight. With these Pieces removed the Gen6 is substantially lighter ( possibly even lighter than a coupe ) & might even make a A8 convertible quicker than a coupe . My query is with these pieces removed , has any experiences window cracks ,irrepeparable flex or worse case scenario possible frame damage to the Gen6 or are they there just for torsional stability to reduce chassis flex especially in cornering or in some type of accident .

Has anyone weighed these pieces ?

I don't think they actually add much weight, and I don't see how they'd be any lighter removed than a coupe, if they are additions to the coupe.

Edit: OK so curiosity got the best of me. Car and driver lists the weight of a 2016 SS convertible they tested at over 3,900 lbs, so if that's true, that's a good 150+ lbs over the coupe. Can anyone confirm?

Not sure how much the x brace weighs, but I put a convertible strut tower brace on my coupe. It weighed just a couple pounds lol. The extra weight on the vert mainly comes from the heavy motors used to power the top. Its the same for any convertible car. Verts are for cruising, coupes are for bruising.

I don't have a solid answer for you. My gut says I doubt any damage or glass breaking will occur.

That said - I have no doubt the car will feel much more soft, squirrelly, and "shimmy" when driving spiritedly. They were put there for a reason. And on the Gen SIX...the engineers intended to put those braces there from the get-go...so it's possible the convertible NEEDS them, versus other cars.

But I don't know any of this for sure.

Like others have said, though - I don't think the braces are making up the bulk of the weight difference...the convertible top components are.

There is also some additional structure behind the back seat that will add a little weight.

You can also take off some of the lugnuts. You don't need them all.

We do eventually have to slow down to the fords that lost the race so we can take our street race money from them .

Remember in the "old days" what cowl shake felt like in a convertible with the top down? Or how bad it was driving even a Corvette with the targa panel removed?

No, those cars didn't have a lot of cracks but they drove like crap.

Don't.

And you won't be faster, because you won't weigh enough less to notice.

Now take the convertible top off with all the hardware and make it a convertible all the time.........
