Thinking about getting a 1994-1996 Impala SS. School me: advice, opinions, etc...

Hello everybody!

I have a always loved the 94-96 Impala SS since they first came out when I was in high school. I have finally found a few that are a very good price and thinking about getting one.

I was wondering if any Camaro 5 members have previously owned one or still currently own one. Please school me on what I need to know about them, and things I should look for when I go and check them out. I know I want a 1996 model because that is the first (and only) year it had a floor mounted shifter.

Thanks in advance!

Honestly at this point most are really long in the tooth, and most are still pricey. It's best to get a used Pontiac G8 GT, faster, better handling and more bang for the buck with waaaaay less miles IMVHO.

I agree the G8 is superior. My best friend got about a 3 months ago. It's a great car! 2008 GT with 45,000 miles. I'm suppose to be giving him my stock 20" SS wheels for him to put on the G8.

I mostly want the Impala as a fixer upper/project car. It doesn't have to be immaculate with low miles. I found quite a few on Autotrader with 100,000 miles going for $8,000 or slightly less.

I looked at a Mercury Marauder too, but I think I like the looks of the Impala better.

Thanks truth411 and Fen for your opinion!

I'd rather have a Roadmaster with an LT-1. Super cheap, an LT-1, and lot's of room.

Impala SS is the only dream car that I haven't had.....yet. My dad is looking for a wagon with an LT-1. Go for the Impala its so much better than the G8

I forgot about the Roadmaster! I use to love those too! The LT-1 probably won't be staying in the Impala too long, would love to do a LS swap in it.

Yeah the Impala SS is on my "dream list". Unfortunately spec wise, it does get killed by the G8 (hell I think even by the FWD Impala SS) but I'm not delusional and aware of that.

Thanks guys! Keep the opinions coming! Decisions, decisions...

Good choice! I have had a few B-bodies in my day. 96 Roadmaster Limited, 96 Caprice B4U with the LT1, and the D-body 93 Fleetwood with the TBI 5.7. Things to look at for on all years are whaterpump, optispark, front end (ball joints, etc), and transmission. for 96s watch out for sludge in the coolant lines, if you go for a roadmaster check the rear airbags on the ones with the dynaride suspension to make sure they aren't leaking. About all i can think of right now, may think of something else later.

Here is a picture of the Caddie

the Roadmaster

I couldn't locate a pic of the Caprice... :(

You could get a 9C1 Caprice police package...Damned near the same as the Impala SS in terms of drivetrain, and they're really damned cheap.

Oh...those big LT1 cars are COOL...and so much room. I had the Roadmaster wagon, wood delete, SS wheels with GS emblems over the centers. LOVED that big beast. They are relatively easy to work on (this goes for all of the B-bodys) and they have lots of room for power adders and mods. Plus, comfy as your favorite 300+ horse lay-z-boy.

I used to own a 94. My favorite (and every impala owners favorite IMO) was the 96' .The Impala beats the G8 in looks HANDS down. And for the price of a G8 (since youd be buying a used car anyways), you can just mod the Impala to beat it in pretty much every catagory except interior quality.

Have you ever installed headers on the B-Body?? i did it on my 94 Impala (hooker shorties) and it was the biggest pain in the ass in my life. NO ROOM.

Thanks Stew! Great info! That Fleetwood looks killer! An ex-girlfriend of mine Aunt had one. It was the light blue color. Hands down one of the smoothest rides ever!

That Roadmaster looks good on SS wheels too!
