Both Volkswagen Auto group and GM say to replace them if ANY damage is shown on the rotor. Also applied to rotor contamination from solvents like brake and carb cleaner, and oils, waxes and tire dressings.
Reason being chips lead to cracks in the rotors when subjected to extreme conditions, and solvents compromise the resin used in bonding rotor molecules together, and oil and dressings absorb into the porous surface of the rotor face permanently changing the rotor properties. Will you ever experience any problems under normal operating conditions? Probably not in the case of small chips on the outside of the rotor, but chemical contamination will cause failure eventually. I really cring when I see carbon ceramic brakes on cars with tire dressings or people using wheel acid on those same cars to clean the wheels, it will get on to the rotor no matter how carefully it's applied. I've been keeping an eye on the c6 zr1 market as I plan to buy one eventually and have seen multiple cars with bad rotors in pictures from contamination (really dark spots) from careless cleaning. My background is in auto repair, and own an auto repair facility that works on all types of vehicles including European cars. A few of my clients have Porsche vehicles with the optional carbon brake kits, so I have read up on proper care of them. As always it's just my experience and opinion in this post. The severity of the damage or contamination would effect the rate of failure. That being said, one customer has a cayenne with cabon brakes and some of the rotors have damage from previous owner chipping outside rotor edge from tire rotation. It's very minor and has no effect on operation as of yet. |

Just replace it. Why try and risk your life/vehicle over the cost of..1200$?..
But, for what its worth, here is the J57 inspection procedure (for cracks/chips, there is a host of other step for over all inspection). |

In that case, they're worth probably nothing. Chances are, the ones who need a replacement rotor either A) burned one up at the track or B) chipped on on accident. In both cases, replacing it with an already chipped rotor doesnt make any sense.
