Side Window Vertical Comparisons

I posted this in the 'Camaro Bunker Syndrome' thread but I think most people may be ignoring that thread after all the heated debate about differing opinions. So, here are the facts of the side window sizes.

I went out and measured the vertical height of the side window glass on my 5th Gen Z/28. The amount of viewable glass - from the door seal at the bottom to the weatherstrip at the top - was 11 and 1/2 inches.

I then went to a local dealer who has a used 2015 Challenger R/T so I measured its side window glass and it was 12 and 1/2 inches, again, only measuring the distance you can actually see out of whether the window was up or down.

There was a 2016 5.0 Mustang sitting there so I measured it. It has 12 and 1/4 inches of viewable glass but it should be noted that the Mustang glass drops off and is not fairly flat on top like the Camaro's and the Challenger's. This 12 and 1/4" was at the widest section just in front of where the driver would be sitting.

Then, I stopped at my local Chevy dealer and measured the viewable glass length on a new 6th Gen 2017 1SS. Not surprisingly, it was the shortest of all - 10 and 1/2" top to bottom.

To recap the vertical height of the pony cars' side windows:
2017 Camaro - 10.5"
2015 Camaro - 11.5"
2016 Mustang - 12.25"
2015 Challenger - 12.5"

Again - these measurements are of the open distance from the top of the door (where you would rest your arm when the window is open) to the bottom of the weatherstrip area that the door glass top closes against for each car.

As far as the windshields go, I did not measure the distance from the top of the dash to the top part of the windshield yet but hope to do that soon. I imagine there will be similar results because the 5th and 6th gen Camaros have windshields with more rake and lower rooflines than their competitors.

Ya I measured the '17 vs the gen 5 and found the same thing. About an inch less glass. For those of us (me) that sit high, even with seat down all the way and tilted, the truncated view of the Gen 6 is annoying. I found the 7 gen Vett to bother me even more esp. the visibility out the windshield.

Thanks for the data Raven87. I was really curious as to how the 6th Gen compared to the 5th Gen.

I'm with marknagy13, I'll sacrifice some ergonomics for aesthetics.

So with these numbers as a reference: What's the diameter of the average helmet? I know I can't pass my helmet through the window on my 2016 Camaro... I'm wondering if that 1 inch they took out between 5th and 6th gen was the one inch that I needed.

This is actually a fairly significant problem for a track car. In a serious hit it is not unusual for the doors to jam shut. If the car is on fire, you have to remove your helmet to get out? What if the driver is unconscious? In a serious accident track workers are specifically instructed to *not* remove the driver's helmet.

Then you have the stock cars where the doors are welded shut anyway.

Not to mention that there are people too fat to fit through a 10.5" window!

Pretty dumb move for a car that is supposed to shine on the track.

Like I said before the only real drawback to side and forward visability are the triangular view blockers at he bottom front of the side windows at the A Pillars by the mirrors. If those annoying triangles were not there then the visiblility would be normal as any modern car at those corners.

So on full race cars the helmets MUST be Permanently placed in the car before the doors are permanently welded shut.

This is the only thing that bothers me about it. My Helmet can't fit through either.
