Burnt oil smell
So just over a month ago I changed the oil in my car. Since then I get the smell of burnt oil coming through the vents when they are open. When I am running the AC recirculation, there is no smell. There is also no smell that I can detect under the hood. I also checked the dipstick and the oil fill cap area and there’s nothing there. I’ve put the car Back on ramps to check the drain plug and oil filter areas and I cannot see anything there. At the same time visibility is a bit poor when I am under the car. Any ideas on where the odor can be coming from? I absolutely cannot smell anything when I am outside of the car. Thank you

I assume oil level is staying the same, right? And the cap/dipstick are installed properly? If that's the case my guess would be some oil got spilled somewhere that's warm enough to make it smell but not hot enough to burn it off. Maybe try pulling some of the plastic covers to see if there's some hiding under there anywhere? Could also check oil pan/oil cooler bolts to make sure those haven't loosened and are dripping oil on the exhaust or something.

I think Alpha1BC may be on the right track. Definitely check your level to make sure you are not consuming oil. |

I had a burnt oil smell and it ended up being a leak from my pinion seal dripping on my exhaust and it was covered under warranty. Wouldn't hurt to check!

Well check everything that has been recommended, thank you. Good point, but yes Oil level on dipstick is perfect. Thank you

Is it possible you dripped a little on the exhaust manifold?

This has been an issue with mine since my first oil change. Dealer shrugged each time I've brought it in. 3 of us stood under it in the shop and couldn't find a leak, but it's there somewhere.

On the last two points that you guys made—you would think there would be a smell under the hood, but there isn’t. There’s literally no smell from the oil anywhere except the vents inside the car. I may just get back under the car again and check drain plug and filter area.

Pull the hose off of the throttle body, open the TB by hand and see if there is oil puddled in the intake

While you were doing the oil change, did you use gloves and touch maybe the exhaust or other parts which get hot with the oily fingers. As Alpha 1 BC said, check also under the plastic if any oil puddle or residue.

It happened a few times in my car after an oil change as well. Takes about a week to go away. probably burnt oil that spilled off

I’d be inclined to agree with above. It can take weeks or sometimes even longer to burn off even the smallest amount of spilled synthetic oil. Just because you can’t readily see it, doesn’t mean it’s not there. I had the same long term interior vent smell when I changed the oil for the first time on my 2016. Drove me nuts for maybe a month... (not a daily driver)

Is it possible you can shove some cardboard under your car while it is parked overnight? Maybe you'll pick up a drip that is hard to find. |
