Best way to clean surface rust of brake rotors?

Hi everyone,

Have some, what looks like, surface rust on the brake rotors. Not on the smooth surface, but on the portion in the center. I can scratch it with my nail and it comes off a bit. Wondering what the best way to clean it off is?

A wire brush will knock it off, but it will return as soon as it gets wet again. It's bare metal and surface rusting is normal.

Painting with caliper or high temp paint is best option. I need to do mine, but have no level place where I live to jack it up.

Its bare metal, and being such will always show surface rust, paint 'em:

While your at it do the Calipers too:
http://www.por15.com/POR-15-Caliper-...8-OZ_p_41.html

With Michelle's car being dark, not only did we do away with surface rust on the rotors, but the black painted rotor hats and calipers behind the black wheels makes it all fade away from sight!
Such a clean look

Scotch brite pad and duplicolor caliper paint. I used brush on, not spray, it has nice self leveling properties.

I used the Duplicolor Caliper Paint on the rotor hats, fins and veins on my 2006 GTO. It began chipping off before the next oil change. Everything had been disassembled cleaned and prepped according to their instructions.
No bueno.

You get what you pay for. The POR-15 product sets up hammer hard like powder coating.

Chassis Saver by magnet paints looks good too... I have seen great reviews from the truck world. Am going to try on my Aspen DD on the rockers and door bottoms to fix some rust, then going to go over with their Monstaliner to protect. I will let you know how it works.

Mine were painted four years ago. I cleaned everything with brake cleaner, no chips no peeling or flaking.

Perhaps you got lucky, and I didn't. I disassembled everything; removed caliper to pull the caliper bracket and rotors off. I cleaned with several different wire brushes and sand paper. I too, then, cleaned everything with Brake Clean to remove any remaining dust, dirt, and oils. Below are a few pictures I found.

Freshly painted with the Duplicolor Caliper Paint:

I notice you are in PA, are any of those 4000 miles driven in the winter time?

LOL, no. Not driven in any inclement weather. Garaged most all the time.

Any high temp paint should work. Just clean and prep the surface well.
