It's a tow hook.

I do like the appearance of the tow hook but what is the real functional purpose of it? I can't see anyone actually using it.

How about getting pulled onto a trailer or flatbed if the car does not run?

Comes with the car and is just for looks to make it look like somebody is about to tow your race car to the starting line because you want to save you engine strictly for the race track. Personally I hang out at the beach and use mine to make extra money pulling 4x4s out of the sand when they get stuck. Thinking of making money this winter pulling people out of snow drifts.

I realized I still have mine in. I forgot to take it out after my DE last week. It's black in a black grille so it doesn't really draw attention to itself.

I don't know here,
But it's mandatory to have it on a track event in Europe
(To quickly tow the broken car out of the ring)
...

If I ever need a tow I am going to use only a flatbed truck and have the operator use the hook. That way there is little chance of damage pulling the car up onto the flatbed. Otherwise I can see the operator hooking up somewhere under the car and causing damage with the chains.
