Need advice on a used truck
My 18 year old son is looking to buy his first vehicle. He wants to get a small pick-up or Jeep, preferably lifted. He wants to spend between $2,500 to $3,500.
I was wondering what models and years might workout for him. Thanks,

Can't really go wrong with any pickup. My current is a '95 Z71, I've had it almost 12 years now. Parts are easy to get, when you pop the hood it looks like an engine.
I had an old Toyota pickup years ago. It was a great pickup and again parts are cheap to get. They rust really bad. Jeeps are cool, check on insurance on them though. |

I've found used jeeps to be incredibly expensive for what they are.

All used 4wds are high here in mn. And that's not a lot if money to spend. Anything u but for that amount if money may have done issues etc.
That said an early 90s Chevy/gmc halfton is what I would go with |

It will be tough to find a decent stock 4x4 for that price range let alone a lift one that isn't beat to hell and back.
Looks like the old man may need to kick in some coin and help the young man out. |

I'm selling my 1983 K5 Blazer. 3 inch lift and 33in tires. You won't have to worry about him getting into trouble with it. It's got a 4 speed manual (L plus 1-3) and is slow and it only gets 10 miles to the gallon. So when he can afford the gas for it, he won't be getting any tickets. Lol.
On the serious side, watch out for lifted Jeep Wranglers with auto trannies. The older autos weren't that great and don't last long with a lift and big tires. The Toyotas are pretty dependible and not to hard on the wallet. That might be your best bet. Nissans a little less dependible then Toyotas, but still not bad. I had a couple Mitsu Monteros. Decent SUV's, but not a lot of aftermarket parts for lifts and such on them. |

Remember 4WD+18 yr old male=unaffordable insurance
$2500 to $3500 won't buy much except an old beater with problems. Get your kid a 2wd 5speed S-10 4 cyl and then save up for the lifted truck later. |

I was going to suggest the same thing. Or a small loan cosigned by dad and a newer Colorado with an easy manageable payment. 9-11K 2004-2008 2WD w/50K on it..... probably somewhere in that price range.

You can still lift the 2wd to give it the look. You also have less parts to fail in a 2wd and they normally aren't beat on as hard.

Thanks to everyone for your advice, it was a big help. This weekend we bought a 2000 Ford, Ranger, extended cab, with the off road package.
We paid $4600 for it. There weren't a lot of small trucks on the market which surprised me. We found it at a dealership an hour from our home. We didn't take a hit on insurance. Putting my 18 year old in a little, beater, truck was better than carrying him on my wife's Eclipse. Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Congrats to him. Hope he enjoys it. You shouldn't have too much trouble finding parts for it, both OEM replacement and aftermarket. I believe it shares components with the Mazda small truck as well.
