drive shaft coupler

how much can they hold? has anyone had issues? are they different between models? like is a ZL1 stronger? than say an SS ? kinda wonder do they hold up pretty good drag racing was going to look up part numbers and see if they cross reference between models just to see if they can be upgraded. if a ZR1 vette is the same you would think with different HP levels they would be upgraded.

The ZL1 coupler is bigger. Bigger in size and the bolts are bigger. But so is the driveshaft and the rear end for the ZL1. It was just built to take big power. Which is why I switched my driveline to ZL1 when I supercharged my SS.

That being said, I have not read of people taking out couplers on the SS. Many people have put power to the SS driveline with great results.

What power level are you thinking?

Never had a problem with the stock coupler while running nitrous. I switched to the ZL1 diff when I put the turbo because I did not think the SS diff was strong enough. There have been a couple guys who broke them (wore them out), but IIRC, they were high mileage units. You would not want to use the ZL1 couplers on an SS because you would have to change yokes or drill and tap them and by the time you did that you could buy a one-piece drive shaft that comes with couplers.

thanks guys, never thought of that. how about Z28 couplers? those might be closer. my power is close to 450hp but I like to over build. I have eaton tru trac, 3:70 gears 1le axles and bearings. libertys doing my trans thought I might upgrade the couplers. do the couplers have top be sync'd when replaced for balance . I know the service manual says mark the location of the drive shaft and the punkin flange and trans flange before disassembly

The z28 uses the 10 bolt rear with a Torsen carrier and 3.91 gear. Never seen the driveshaft, but my guess is it's the same as an SS/M6 shaft. Axle shafts are similar to the 1LE, i.e. bigger outer cv joint. I compared them to 1LE shafts and could not see a difference besides the PN label.

2010 SS 520 HP here with the manual transmission. I have never damaged a coupler guibo but I have broken a number of the driveshaft bolts. I replaced the bolts and used care to get the torque right on the replacements and they all held. The rubber couplers are out of production now anyway. It might be a good time to look at other options.

Never broke one but never trusted them either. Mine are a thing of the past. The carbon fiber drive shaft does away with them in favor of solid aluminum blocks

I moved to an aluminum shaft and did notice a slight increase in NVH, but not nearly enough for me to put the factory shaft back in, but enough for me to keep the factory shaft on the shelf just in case. It did seem to take some slop out of the driveline and make it launch harder, but I changed more than the shaft so hard to say for sure.
